Is there a title that grabs your attention more than Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion? I will admit that the title intrigued me before I even knew what the heck this game was about. However, the charming art style, the witty humor, and the retro 16-bit style of the whole thing really did make me take notice of Turnip Boy and his plight against a corrupt government!
The Vegetable Government
The plot of the game is hilarious. You play as Turnip Boy as the title, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion suggests! Anyway, he likes to rip up forms and he has done this to his tax forms and he is not going to pay his taxes! Well, this is great in theory, but one day the government comes calling for their taxes and Mayor Onion has him evicted out of his home and hits him with a massive tax bill.
Turnip Boy heads out to take various jobs to get enough money to pay off his debt and get his home back. However, on his way, he discovers there is something very corrupt going on with this vegetable government.
The Legend of Turnip Boy
The game has a very Legend of Zelda: Link To The Past thing going on with the visuals. There is just so much personality here and I think it is near impossible not to get swept up in it all. The whole game is just so charming and adorable. All of the little food characters have a ton of personality and the larger boss-type characters like pigs and cats even have a ton of charm to them as well.
While some people may think that an indie game going for a SNES style has been done to death. I do feel that a game like this shows that you can have that retro style, but also put your own stamp on it if you are creative enough.
Taking It All On
The gameplay on offer in Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is straight to the point. You need to head around the town taking on various missions/jobs so that you can earn money to pay off your debt. These jobs will range from taking on puzzles, fighting bosses, exploring dungeons, and so on. You have to use stuff like garden tools and these vegetables that are like explosives to get through the game. Nothing is too cryptic and it is more about the player having fun than trying to make them think too hard.
There are some great indie games this year, but I feel that Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is possibly the most charming of them all. The whole premise of the game is hilarious and this is matched by a very cool style to the whole thing. Best of all, the game is more about having fun than trying to be overly clever with puzzles that are way too cryptic. If you like fun, you will like this!
