Flynn: Son of Crimson

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a game that is a real throwback to the 16-bit days. Actually, it may be a tad too high-end for that, but this being on something like the PlayStation or the Saturn is certainly believable. As someone who loves their action platformers, this is a game I have been following for a while. It just ticks all of the boxes for what I want in a game of this style and it is one of the better retro inspired games to be released in 2021 in my humble opinion.

Stopping The Scourge

For a retro action platformer, Flynn: Son of Crimson is way more story driven than you would think. The game takes place in the fantasy land of Rosantica which is a peaceful place, but that peace is at risk as the barrier that protects it from the evil that is known as The Scourge is starting to crack and evil beasts are flooding into the land.

Flynn, a young hero who has the power of Crimson Energy along with his dog like companion Dax, Guardian Spirit of the Land needs to do what they can to save the day.

The Ultimate Warrior

The combat in Flynn: Son of Crimson is fast-paced and pretty damn epic. Flynn has the ability to use Crimson Energy and this is what the majority of his attacks are based around. The Crimson Sword is all about quick and slashing attacks as well as giving you the ability to dash. The Crimson Axe is a lot slower, but more precise, powerful, and able to smash certain walls and objects. The Crimson Claws are great for very quick attacks and fighting in the air and they also let you wall jump too.

As well as using these attacks and abilities, Flynn can also use various magic attacks as he progresses through the game as well. He has a great arsenal of moves and powers so combat is very exciting and it gives you many options in regards to how you go about things. He can also get help from Dax as well. You can call in Dax and she will fight enemies and smash through walls and so on!

A World Worth Saving

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a 2D action-platformer and the land of Rosantica and The Scourge are both very interesting places. There is a lot of diversity in this game in the various locations that the levels are based ranging from a creepy castle to a desert like land. There are many different enemy types too and the retro style cut scenes that fill in the story are the icing on the cake.

The whole game from a presentational point of view is very well done. It has a pretty kickass soundtrack too which helps get you all riled up and ready for battle.

Pros:

• The retro style of the presentation is amazing
• The gameplay feels fantastic
• The game is challenging, but it never feels completely unfair
• For a retro style game, it has a very compelling story

Cons:

• Getting used to the dash may take a little while
• I really, really hope that someone makes a physical version of this game!
