If you’re a big fan of the classic scrolling shooter games that have been a staple of gaming throughout the years, then you’re going to love Raiden III by Seibu Kaihatsu. Jump into this fully realised 3D arcade shooter and prepare to blast the heck out of some alien douchebags as you take the fight to the mother ship.
Gameplay
Goodness me, this gameplay is absolutely outstanding. Taking control of the new Fighting Thunder ME-02, the players have a variety of weapons in their arsenal that help them wreck the baddies in fine fashion. It would be a sin not to mention just how well they have tightened up the controls in Raiden III compared to previous titles and it really shows. Even through making the bomb move explode instantaneously, it used to have a little delay but in a bullet time game like this it’s very difficult to know exactly what’ going to be happening 2 seconds ahead in time so using the bomb was difficult before this upgrade. It’s a solid improvement in every real way.
This game is hard though, don’t get me wrong. It bears strong resemblance to Ikaruga, a game of a very similar vein but each are so strong in what they offer that the real similarity between the two is the quality of the games build. There are score multipliers and even multiplayer so you can really bring this game to the next level and enjoy it with someone who can keep up with it.
Plot
There is a plot to this game and it’s completely understandable if you don’t care, however I feel inclined to mention it anyway because it’s surprisingly interesting. Following on from the previous games, the Crystals, seemingly extraterrestrial enemies, are messing stuff up on earth and causing all sorts of trouble. It’s up to you to put a stop to their nonsense and crush them under heel.
The ending confused the heck out of me, I won’t lie but it still felt beautifully melancholic and I must admit that it was surprisingly interesting. If any of you can gleam what it was trying to say then I applaud you.
Soundtracks
The tunes in this game are absolute bangers, can’t lie. Heavy synth, fast paced bass-ey goodness with complex and interesting sections from start to finish. The music sets the mood brilliantly and truly helps you feel that frenetic combat style. I’ll be honest, there is no doubt that just from listening to the music you’d be able to tell what sort of game this is, that’s how well it fits the theme.
I found my head bobbing along as I was blasting those crystalline bastards back to hell. It’s just one more thing this game gets absolutely right.
This is an incredibly strong game in every way. If you enjoy the classic scrolling shooters like this then you are sure to get a considerable kick out of this title.
