The Zero series is one of the best things to happen to the Mega Man franchise and Mega Man Zero 3 could be my favorite in the entire series! Set right after what happened in 2. What we have here is a sequel that shows Capcom clearly listened to the fans. As a result, they have not reinvented the wheel with this but done enough to make it an improvement on what came before it.
Zero Saves The Day
The Mega Man lore at this point became a bit hard to follow. I will say that if you played the last two games and liked them then I am sure you will really enjoy what Mega Man Zero 3 is offering from a story point of view. A strange ship has fallen from the sky, Zero and the gang go to check it out and as you would expect all is not as it seems.
I was very impressed with the presentation of the game. Capcom even dating back to the NES do not make bad looking or sounding games and this is a shining example of that.
Hard, But Fair
One of the things that the two previous Zero games were known for was how hard they were. Do not get me wrong, this is still a very hard game, but out of the three, Mega Man Zero 3 is easier overall and as a result, can feel far fairer. I feel this makes it a game that might be easier for those put off by the difficulty to jump into.
Classic With A Few New Bells And Whistles
The gameplay on offer here is classic Mega Man Zero action. Zero starts off with his abilities at full power which is great, but there are many ways you can improve him as you play. You can get these different styles of chips that can give him abilities such as double jump, upward slash and so on. Also, the “cyber elf” element from the last game has been expanded here which again will give you buffs and abilities to help you progress through the game.
The gameplay is pure Mega Man platforming and shooting and it is truly excellent and addictive stuff. Even when you die, you will want to jump straight back in and try to learn from your mistake. Once you beat the game, you can play a harder version or have some real fun with the new game plus mode where you keep all your progress.
Add to this some unlockable mini-games and this is a game that is going to keep you busy for a long time.
I had an absolute blast while playing through Mega Man Zero 3. So much that once I beat it, I played through it again in new game plus! I enjoyed the previous two games, but for me, this one here really nails it. It is a ton of fun to play and features exciting platforming, shooting and even the upgrade system is fun and easy to get to grips with. I would go as far as to say this is one of my favorite handheld Mega Man games of all time
Pros:
- The game is just a ton of fun to play
- It looks and sounds great
- I liked the upgrade system
- The difficulty is very challenging, but it feels fair
- Tons of things to do once you have beaten the game
Cons:
- While “easier” it is still very challenging, maybe too much for some?
- To get the best out of the story you need to have played 1 and 2
