Elona, a PC game developed by Noa and released in 2007, is a roguelike role-playing game. Roguelike games have been around for some time now. It’s one of the earliest genres of gaming. It’s a nostalgic experience that has you dungeon-crawling through procedurally generated levels. Of course, as with any roguelike game, Elona is based in a fantasy world where you can play as a certain race, play a fantasy class of your choosing, and fight monsters with weapons or magic.
A Roguelike Fantasy Game
Roguelike games might not be everyone's cup of tea but those who love fantasy titles are going to enjoy the vast range of races, classes, jobs, and weapons you can choose in Elona. The list of races includes some even fantasy gamers who have never heard of like Yerles, Juere, and Eulderna.
However, there are some recognizable races like Lich, Goblins, and Dwarves. Classes are the same with a list of new ones like Tourist, Pianist, and Predator. There are also familiar classes like Thief, Wizard, and Warrior. Some of the jobs in Elona include Fishing, Mining, and Carpentry. Some of the weapons include Scythes, Polearms, and Longswords.
Etherwind Can Be Frustrating
Etherwind is this annoying mechanic in Elona. It’s a weather effect that diseases your character if you’re not able to find shelter. If you happen to be out in the field when Etherwind occurs, then you could run into some powerful monsters at the same time you’re being afflicted by Ether disease. Unfortunately, not every “shelter” is safe. Even if you’re in a building in town it isn’t considered a shelter. Etherwind is characterized by a weather effect on your screen so if you’re inside a building and still see the effect, then you’re not safe. Every town that you visit has a shelter. You can speak with the innkeeper to rest. You could also carry a portable shelter to use. You could also find shelter in a dungeon if you’re not near any towns or don’t have a shelter on you.
Elona Is Free
If anything, Elona is free and deserves a spot amongst the roguelike genre hall of fame (if there is one). Keep in mind that it is a Japanese roguelike game but it does have an English translation that can make the dialogue kind of funny. Procedural generation keeps the game somewhat fresh as you never know what you’re going to run into out in the open world.
There is a lot to do in Elona and is a great time waster but the game has been discounted by Elona's developers. Fortunately, the source code has been released so the only game you'll be playing is fan-made ones.
