Beyond the Evil

In this heart pounding mystery turned horror, players are given the role of Gary Nephew, an investigator trying to solve a dangerous homicide. Beyond the Evil is a detective style game that has you racing to find a murderer before they release a plague on the world.

Although Beyond the Evil appears very similar to the vast majority of classic indie horrors, it has managed to create a fresh, original take on exploring a mansion. The game has a few unique features that keep things interesting.

Vertical Space

Like games such as Genshin Impact, you can climb onto various objects instead of just walking around on the ground. This ability is fun but can also be a bit of a problem. The climbing ability can be a little too sensitive, with you finding yourself on top of the dresser you planned to open. Still, the ability to climb adds a whole new dimension to the game, and makes exploring that much more challenging.

Well Thought Out Story

The game has a very solid story to it. Like many games such as The Inheritance of Crimson Manor, Beyond the Evil places you in a dark, Victorian manor to explore. The game offers an added dimension however, through building the story over the course of 5 chapters.

In order to progress the story, you’ll need to find keys hidden in the mansion. This isn’t as simple as it sounds. There are thousands of objects in the manor that can be interacted with, and some of the keys are hidden inside of other objects.

Completing each chapter can take quite a while as you search for the keys. The keys unlock the next section of the story.

Minor Jump scares

Although not a big part of the game, there are jump scares here and there throughout the story. These are mostly unexpected screams, but there is nothing dangerous until the final phase of the game. In the final phase, a monster chases you and can kill you if it catches you. Fortunately, all you have to do to make the monster forget about you is to break its line of sight. It also doesn’t seem to know how to open doors, so if you shut a glass door for example, it will run at you but be unable to kill you.

Great Navigation

One of the nicer features of this game is the ability to save the game at any time. Many indie games only allow you to save at predesignated points, or not at all. The fact that the game allows you to save when ever you want makes playing the game much more satisfying.

9

If you like indie horror games, you will like Beyond the Evil. Although it doesn’t have the best graphics, it makes up for that with a great story and a mostly smooth experience. The developers have also made it clear that they are working hard to remove any bugs and have followed up on every bug report in an effort to smooth them out. If you’re looking for a short but enjoyable horror, this game is a great choice for the price point.

Pros:

  • Easy menu navigation
  • Engaging storyline

Cons:

  • A few minor bugs
