Spider-Man and Venom – Maximum Carnage springs Spider-Man, Venom, Carnage and numerous other Marvel Comics characters into life. You begin the game as Spider-Man, who spins webs and possesses the proportionate strength of a spider. He is also equipped with Spider-Sense, which tingles when danger is near.

At certain points throughout the game's 25+ levels of play, you can switch to Venom, who was created when Spider-Man's (temporary) black alien symbiote costume melded with reporter Eddie Brock. The symbiote also infected Cletus Kasady, who as a result became Carnage.

Venom hates Peter Parker (aka Spider-Man), but he feels responsible for the havoc being wreaked by Carnage, so he assumes the role of one of the good guys in this game. Carnage has enlisted Shriek, Doppelganger, Demogoblin and other supervillains and thugs to join his reign of wanton chaos, destruction and mayhem.

Security systems, robots, crazed citizens and other obstacles interfere as well. Luckily, Captain America, Black Cat and various other superheroes will even the odds by occasionally coming to your aid. Simply pick up the superhero icons when you see them and use them as needed.

The beat-em-up action in Spider-Man and Venom – Maximum Carnage takes place in New York City and San Francisco. You'll fight in the streets and alleyways, on rooftops, inside the Fantastic Four Building and in Central Park.

Most of the Spider-Man and Venom – Maximum Carnage is spent fighting psychotic armies of punk kids, teenaged girls, trenchcoat-wearing guys, and umbrella-wielding old men. Sure, the demographics lack in variety, but they make up for it by being one's that you'd typically want to beat up anyway. There's the occasional super-villain as well, who'll make things harder for you with their pesky super-powers, but they do serve to make the battles more interesting.

You can jump, backflip, punch, kick, crawl and perform somersaults, and you can use your webs for swinging, climbing, firing web bolts and pulling enemies toward you. You can even form your webbing into a shield! To help you in your struggle to maintain law and order, you can collect energy boosters, extra lives and continues which appear throughout the game.

Evil Carnage is rampaging through New York City and it's up to Spider-Man and Venom to stop him.
