The return of this classic game that pretty much helped build the genre was posing to be one of the biggest updated games of recent years, but according to many critics and players, the game fell a bit short of expectations. In this analysis of Warcraft III: Reforged we review the pros and cons of a remastering that updates the graphics of the classic, losing along the way options and the opportunity to do something worthy of the legacy. So let's get started by talking a little about this game.

About the game

Warcraft III was, as its name suggests, the third installment of a more than consolidated real-time strategy saga. Until then, we had only seen the conflict between humans and orcs, and so the story begins in Warcraft III in the orc introductory campaign, but we soon see that Blizzard expands the universe.

Undead, humans, orcs, playable sub-factions, night elves, high elves, blood elves, the naga... There are a lot of races, and all of them have their campaign or their protagonism within other campaigns.

The campaign does not feel outdated at all, if you are looking for a game with massive battles, you are not going to find it. We have groups of very few units that must follow in the wake of a hero who levels up and learns both active and passive skills.

It was the great novelty of the genre (Blizzard got into more RPG components with the secondary quests and equipable items for the heroes), and the truth is that it is still an incredibly fresh system.

Not all that glitters...

That a strategy game would give importance to the story was little less than a pipe dream in the days of Warcraft 3. It was taken for granted that the fans were looking for war and a little more. But not Blizzard. They were one of the exceptions, giving importance to the construction of a story that gave meaning to the fight, which they demonstrated from the very origin of the Warcraft universe, or even Starcraft, to make the story of Reign of Chaos an epic and exciting story difficult to forget.

And of course, this all remains intact in the campaign we play in Warcraft III Reforged, so we have a great campaign and an amazing story, full of cinematics and wonders. But keep in mind when this game was released, and what it could, or rather should, have been, the end result becomes a bit disappointing.

Some of the changes in this remaster are also some of the scenarios that have been visually updated to be more in line with the visuals of World of Warcraft, but this remains a purely visual change. The same issue applies to the user interface, which still remains pretty much untouched. And that has aged quite a lot by modern UI standards in video games.

As we said above, Warcraft III was a game of great quality, and it remains of the same quality in this remake. But Warcraft III: Reforged was also a game that had a lot of room to grow, and many of its features were missing in the final product. It's a great game because the original was already great, but on its own, it falls a bit short.

Pros:

  • Campaign has kept its essence and is even better now with the visuals of today.
  • Gameplay is fun, and the mechanics are good.
  • Amazing story

Cons:

  • Interface is not very polished, and can be a bit confusing.
  • Falls short
