With so many complicated games out there, it’s refreshing when games make an effort to go the other way. Thronefall does just that, by taking your average tower defence game, and turning it into a minimalistic but still wildly entertaining version.
Thronefall works by giving you control over a village during the day. You must carefully manage your resources so that when enemies come at night, you are prepared. There are many different ways you can handle the nightly waves of enemies, but how you tackle them is up to you.
Cute Simple Graphics
The game has beautifully made 2D graphics. The graphics are richly colored and offer moderate detail. Just like much of the rest of the game, the graphics are pleasant but minimal, so they don’t take your focus off the game. The overall feel is fun and relaxing, without any elaborate details.
Swiftly Scaling Challenge
The game starts out very simple with just a few enemies to defeat at night. The player rides grandly around on a horse, and can defeat the enemies single handedly the first night. After this, the game scales up significantly. Each night the enemies get more and more difficult to defeat. Players must use their resources wisely in order to be able to defeat the new wave of enemies, sometimes into the hundreds.
Minimalist Gaming
Despite the challenge of the game, the developers have worked hard to make this game simple. If you’ve ever played Kingdom Two Crowns, it is stripped down in the same manner, but isn’t a side scroller. The developers have worked hard to make sure the focus is on thinking your way through the game, not the ability to flip through a hundred different modes quickly.
The simplicity of the game is shown in a few ways early on. Buildings are set in fixed areas for example, so you don’t have to worry about building location as part of the strategy.
The game slowly adds complexity in manageable bites, so even raw new beginners can get into the game. The result is that a genre normally open to just a few elites who are very experienced in the gamy type, is now open to nearly everyone.
Unlockable Content
To make it easier, new additions to the game are added slowly. These additions are called “perks” and must be earned through progression in the game. Because the point the player is at is thoroughly understood before the next perk is added, it never feels overwhelming.
This is a thoughtfully produced game that many people will enjoy. If you have always liked the idea of city building, tower defense style games but found them too overwhelming, this is the perfect game for you. The game is designed to be accessible to all people, and to be fun and relaxing. If you prefer intense battles that have you flying through a hundred different screens to keep everything afloat—this game might not have the tension you are looking for.
