The Walking Dead

Don't you love a story-rich game where character development services as the centerpiece of gameplay? It's hard to find players who don't enjoy intriguing stories in their games. But if you weren't sold on the idea of an immersive narrative, perhaps The Walking Dead will drag you in with the zombie apocalypse theme!

The Walking Dead is an interactive drama game that puts the story above all, being set in the same universe as the comic books and critically acclaimed TV series. The developers behind the title are known for their ability to create an exciting game bringing the narrative as the core mechanics rather than adding any additional puzzles, obstacles, or challenges. Let's see how they fare with The Walking Dead.

Lights, Camera, Zombies!

The Walking Dead consists of five-game play episodes released over time to constitute more of a TV or movie feel. But it ensures it remains relevant as a game with a high level of interactivity. While the action troupes are minimal, players' dialogue choices and interactions are highly regarded. You can be assured of a wild ride from entering the zombie-infested world.

The game's narrative starts with a simple promise that eases into complex themes and thrilling side stories. You'll share the character roles, with the main focus on Lee, a convict turned apocalypse survivor who finds himself tasked with reuniting a young girl, Clementine, with her parents. Since the whole game revolves around the storyline, we won't tread further - but hear it from us, it's magnificent.

Players won't find themselves short of twists, turns, and thrills as they navigate the urban wastelands and overcome character challenges to meet their ultimate goals. The dialogue is impressive, the characters are well-drawn out, and the comic book-style visuals make the original concepts bounce to life.

The end game depends on your choices and how you interact with specific scenarios. It's safe to say that there's enough choice to bring a variety of polarized endings together, so do give your interactions a little thought before executing them. The Walking Dead is simply a masterpiece of narrative-driven gameplay; we can't ask for much more than that.

Apocalypse Forever

It's not often you have a game with such powerful writing, and it's even rarer when these words power the entire success of the game. The Walking Dead will satisfy players in almost every aspect of gameplay, leaving you craving more at every scene. It's one of the most immersive, intriguing stories we've seen in games in years, comparable to the storytelling revelation that was Portal 2.

So there's no need to convince anyone to give The Walking Dead a whirl. Despite minor graphical glitches here and there, nothing will stop this game from being heralded as one of the best narrative-driven games we've ever played.

Game Reviews

Zombies are some of the most haunting creatures ever introduced in fiction, and yet we can’t get enough of the stories involving them. The Walking Dead satisfies that itch for good zombie stories with its amazing episodic storytelling.

Story

A game that has grown to become a classic, Telltale’s The Walking Dead is an amazing title that just throws you into some of the most emotionally impactful video game story experience you’ve ever played. The storytelling is amazing as you play as Lee Everett, an ex-convict trying to make his way through the zombie outbreak. However, Lee misses out on his prison sentence thanks to the jail-ending apocalypse. Before he can embrace his freedom or contemplate the insanity of life’s events, he meets a little girl named Clementine whom he feels obligated to protect.

Lee is a strong protagonist along with Clementine. These characters have impactful and memorable scenes together that are sure to shape your gaming experience forever and perhaps even your real life experience as it is an emotionally impactful tale of redemption and fatherhood. Lee’s dark past combined with the sudden responsibility found at the end of the world is a truly scary sight to see. The life of Lee is one that will resonate with people, more so adults and parents. It is a mature story that does not hold back.

Gameplay

Your entire adventure is impacted by the decisions you make. In classic Telltale fashion, The Walking Dead truly emphasizes the power of choice. Additionally, there’s really not much that can be done to change the nature of events as characters will remember the events of the game, and these decisions will impact aspects of the story later on. The draw of the “choose your own adventure” gameplay is tense and makes you truly feel like a person dealing with the stress of a zombie apocalypse. Dialogue choices only pop up for a few seconds, so you’ll need to figure out what you want to say on the spot. This is particularly nerve wracking as it can feel like some of these decisions should require some more time to make.

Interesting mechanics

There are 5 episodes in this game that sums up to be Season 1 of the Telltale Walking Dead video game series, and it is a true spectacle to observe. The decisions you make all have interesting ways they spin around the story, and it’s always interesting to go back and see what you could have done differently. This is similar to games like Life is Strange and The Wolf Among Us, giving players control of their character’s choices to the fullest.

For combat and other interactions that aren’t dialogue choices, you’ll need to use the point and click mechanics to interact with the world around you. We enjoyed looking through every detail in a new environment as there may be some stuff that could prove useful in the journey later on.

9.5

The Walking Dead is an amazing game that feels like one of those once in a lifetime experiences. If you’re looking for a game that hits right in the heart, this is the one to play.
