Pioneers of Pagonia

Pioneers of Pagonia is a relaxing exploration game that leaves you in charge of exploring and building in the many thousands of islands of Pagonia. Each map is procedurally generated, which means no matter how far you explore, you’ll always find something new. The game has been generously built with 40 different types of buildings, and 70 different goods. These resources come at a price—you’ll need to be able to defend them from wild animals, both mythical and natural, as well as bandits.

As your population grows, you can send them out to explore new lands, and find new populations interested in joining your village.

Rich in Side Quests

The villages mentioned earlier won’t simply join with your village because they were discovered. Instead, they often have personal problems that need to be resolved first. If you are able to solve their problems, they will often become part of your world.

Early Access

As great as Pioneers of Pagonia already is, it’s only the beginning. The developers are opening it for early access, with plans to grow from there. They have chosen early access so they can take advantage of player feedback.

They also plan to add even more buildings and features as time goes on.

Polished Performance

Already the game has been given a warm reception in beta because of the polished performance. This should come as no surprise to those who know the developer’s name, Volker Wertich, the same person who made the original Settlers. The game has a lot of similarities to Settlers, but the village AI is a lot more responsive, and there are a few other unique differences too.

Gameplay

Gameplay is fairly straightforward. You can decide where the road goes by drawing a line, and there’s a grid buildings can follow to help keep things orderly. All buildings muast be connected to a road, and the road destroys what ever is in its path, so it’s important to plan roads thoughtfully. The game gives you a starter ship full of materials and villagers, but after that you’ll need to gather resources yourself to grow from there. Villagers can’t directly be interacted with, apart from directing them to do different tasks.

Territory can be expanded through using Guard Towers. When a guard tower is placed, the villagers will move the border stones, allowing civilians to go farther afield.

Explorer villager will explore lands so the fog covering them is lifted. This helps other citizens access new resources. As the village grows, more and more resources will become available.

Issues

Right now the game plays relatively smoothly, but there are minor issues that have cropped up. One of them is one that was common to Settlers too—traffic issues. Roads can get heavily overused, making it hard for villagers to go back and forth as needed.
