The fifth installment of the Persona series has made a massive splash in the West. A huge hit in Japan for years, the Persona series has cemented itself as one of the best modern anime gaming experiences. However, Persona 5 Strikers differs from the usual entries in the Persona series as it takes Dynasty Warriors gameplay and smashes it together with the Persona universe. Fans of Hyrule Warriors and Dragon Quest Heroes II will definitely find something to enjoy.

Kingdom Hearts meets Persona

While at its core, developer Atlus marries the established Dynasty Warriors format with the explosively popular Persona setting, Persona 5 Strikers actually shares a lot more in common with famous JRPGs like Kingdom Hearts. In fact, presenting Persona 5 Strikers simply as a spin-off does not do it proper justice. Fans of the original game will be pleased to hear that Strikers offers a direct continuation of number 5’s plot, being set just a mere 6 months after the end of Persona 5.

That said, newcomers to the Persona series will be more than a little bit lost here. While there are a number of great new characters, Strikers does not go above and beyond to explain things to newcomers, severely risking its broad appeal outside of the established Persona fan base.

Phantom Thieves on Tour

The story of Strikers, while in some ways a reduction of what Person 5 has to offer, is a development on the well-established Persona formula. Rather than have control of each day during a year through Persona’s iconic calendar system, Strikers offers players a month-long road trip across Japan. The way the story tackles this change in systems is very clever, and it feels like a natural progression for the series, rather than just a hackneyed hand-wave to excuse a spin-off.

And while the core gameplay is significantly different this time around, the visual art style and aesthetic of Persona 5 is clear as day. There’s no denying Atlus’ impressive feat in bringing the Persona universe to life in a new and previously unreleased way.

Hack ‘n’ Slash

Players can expect to tear their way through wave after wave of enemies during their playthrough. While swapping between members of the Phantom Thieves gang, players will deliver a deluge of deliciously dynamic attacks that fill the screen with a ton of visual eye candy.

Combat is not particularly deep, but it does offer enough complexity to keep things interesting. This is compounded by the personality of each of the playable characters and their movesets that makes the game a joy to play, even if the fights do become a bit repetitive as the game draws to a close.

Persona 5 Strikers is a must-have for fans of the original entry into the Persona series. With a continuation of the smash hit’s story, there’s no reason for fans not to jump head first into this new expansion to the established formula. That said, for newcomers thinking now would be a good time to see what all the fuss is about, it comes highly recommended that you stick to Persona 5 first, as this game offers a new twist on the core gameplay, and does not offer a lifeline to those who aren’t familiar with the series’ story and lore.
