Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!

This game belongs to one of Nintendo's biggest and best-selling game series that they seem to have forgotten nowadays. Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! was originally released in 1987, and later released again in 1990 without Tyson's name in the title. The game itself was an attempt to adapt the Arcade to the NES, obviously with some changes due to the difference in power between the two platforms. The storyline introduced us to a little fighter named Little Mac, who thanks to the help of his trainer will try to become the champion of the World Video Boxing Association. But what makes this game different from the others in the franchise? Let's talk about it.

About the game

Fights in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out! are 3 minutes long and with a maximum of 3 rounds. If we have not knocked our opponent down (either by knocking him out or throwing him 3 times in one round) the referee will decide the winner. The control of Mac is simple, with left and right we dodge, giving down we cover, and giving twice down we duck, with the A and B buttons we will hit the opponent's body and if we press up we will give blows in the face. Little Mac has two moves: one that takes more energy and only works on certain opponents, and another that does not require much and works against all. This second one is called the "Uppercut", and if we get enough energy we can use it.

We will also use the START button to use the special uppercut once we accumulate enough energy, and the SELECT button to revive Mac when we have fallen. With this learned we just need to survive the different rivals, as each one has its special techniques and weaknesses, some of them can be knocked down with a single blow if we find the right moment, but they can also knock us down, so we must be very careful. Fortunately, the controls are quite good and do not fail.

A sports game?

To complete this game we must overcome more than 10 fights and finally the champion. It may seem simple or short, but the truth is that each new character can cost us a lot, some of them can even make us desperate. Unfortunately, there is no two-player mode or anything like that, so the duration will be based on the desire you have to keep playing.

Unlike games like Double Dribble and Baseball Stars, Myke Tyson's Punch-Out! is not meant to be a realistic recreation of the boxing sport. It is a much more cartoonish game, and it's a direct adaptation of an arcade game, so it's safe to call it an arcade game. But maybe this is the reason it stands out from all the sports games available for the NES; with the only possible exception of Excitebike, a launch title of the console that became a solid classic.

Review: 9/10

Mike Tyson Punch-Out! is an incredibly solid game. It's pretty fun to play, and it can be quite challenging. It has just enough story to keep it fun and entertaining. The graphics are great, and the sound effects really add to the atmosphere.

Step into the ring as Little Mac, a 17-year old fighter from the Bronx. You're ranked number three in the minor circuit, but your goal is to work your way up through the rankings so you can challenge Mike Tyson, alias Kid Dynamite, in a dream fight! First you'll have to win 14 other bouts against palookas like Don Flamenco, Piston Honda, and Super Macho Man in the minor, major, and world circuits. Each bout is three three-minute rounds of action. If you're knocked down three times, you'll get a Technical Knock Out TKO. Go down for a count of ten and you're "outta there," Knocked Out (KO). If both fighters battle to the end of all three rounds, then the ref picks the winner. The action in the ring is tough. You'll have to use right and left punches as well as uppercuts to knock your opponent down. To stay on your feet, it takes fancy footwork and the ability to read your opponent's moves! Just remember, if you've never faced Mike Tyson, you won't know whether you're World Video Game Champion material, or just another bum who could have been a contender.
