"Check him out... Mario rips towards you. Check him into the glass. Nab the puck. Pass to an open winger for the give-&-go. Then break free at mid-ice to connect. And slam home a 90mph slapshot. It's life-sized, gut-tightening action. He steals the puck, turns it up ice. You unload a body-crushing check. He drops his gloves... It's a fight! A jab. An uppercut. A roundhouse. And there's the whistle! Lose, and you chill out in the penalty box. Play on one of 16 fast and furious teams from Montreal to L.A. Pull from three sets of frontliners. Between periods, flip through 14 pages of hot stats. Major stuff. Major mayhem. After all, you're playing with Mario Lemieux!"
1991 has been quite a year for hockey superstar Mario Lemieux. In May he led an underdog Pittsburgh Penguin squad all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals. Shortly before the Finals, Mario signed a deal with Sega of America to do a hockey game for the Genesis. Some guys have all the luck...
Mario Lemieux Hockey is a four meg action simulation. Fifteen teams (fictional, but using real NHL cities) shoot it out in tournament or exhibition mode. Teams are rated in six skill categories: shooting, power, passing, speed, defense, and goalie. Each team has three lines of players.
Mario Lemieux will be statistics heaven -- there are more stats tracked during this game then any other sports game to date. Everything has been covered, from the types of penalties to percentage of time spent on the attack.
Look for Mario Lemieux Hockey to skate into your store by Christmas.

Sega has teamed up with superstar puckster Mario Lemieux to bring you Mario Lemieux Hockey. You or you and a friend can compete in an exhibition match or a 16-team tournament. If you just want to hone your offensive and defensive skills, you can select the practice mode. You can even practice your punches, roundhouses, uppercuts, and other fighting moves without actually getting involved in a real game. Once you do start a real game, you can turn off the fighting option if you prefer violence-free hockey.
You'll also need to decide whether you want a fair, tough, or blind referee and if you want to play by pro league rules, which can be a little strict in the infraction-calling department. There are three skill levels and four period-lengths to choose from. Other options and features include team skill ratings, penalties, checking, player substitutions, shootouts, and passwords for saving options and tournament games.
Even though Mario Lemieux Hockey acks an official NHL or NHLPA license, you still get the same intensity and hard-hitting action of professional hockey and you get one of the best players to ever play the game, too!
