Lethal Company

Lethal Company is a fantastic 4 player co-op horror/survival game that I have had a ton of fun playing with a few buddies of mine over the last few weeks. The game as I write this is still in early access, but there is still more than enough here to keep you and your friends entertained. I will say that to get the best out of this, you do have to play with people you know or at the very least be comfortable in chatting with strangers online.

Working For The Man!

The premise of Lethal Company is pretty cool and it is kind of like the Aliens movies or any other movie that sees people heading to the stars and other planets to try and find resources. We play as a character that is working for an organization called The Company. The Company pays really well, but they have very high targets that they require those who work as scavengers for them to hit, you keep hitting your target and you are ok, you will keep getting work, you fail to hit your target and they will just blast you into space.

To The Moon!

In Lethal Company, we end up deploying to a series of moons, each one has its own style, monsters, and so on that we have to deal with. The idea is that we are there to get as much scrap as we can. We have a quota of what we are required to get, the premise is quite simple. We need to grab the scrap and head back to the ship that is going to leave the moon whether we are on it or not. To be honest with you, if you have played any other kind of first-person survival style of game, this is going to feel right at home for you and that is meant as a compliment.

I Will Be Right Back!

Playing this with a couple of my buddies has been a real highlight of my gaming year so far. Lethal Company is played from the first person and you and your squad will touch down on a moon and then you are free to go about exploring any way that you want. It is so tempting to do the classic horror movie trope of splitting up so you can get more loot, but in doing so, you put yourself at massive risk from all of the monsters that want you dead! There is a nice variety to the monsters, some are very aggressive and will actively hunt you down, while others are more “friendly” and will only attack you if you are a threat to them. It can be really tense as you are hunted down and try to make it back to the ship before you lose your loot and your life.

The Tools Of The Trade

One of the things that help add to the tension of Lethal Company is that you are limited in what you can carry. You can only carry four items at any one time and there is a mixture of two handed items and one handed items, I found that the two handed items were more useful, but the game does not allow you to do stuff like climb ladders or anything else that would require a free hand.

You do also have a handy “communicator” that allows you to chat with your squad and this is something I found to be awesome. The fun I have had with this game was in playing with my friends and trying to come up with a clever plan to get in, get out, and get better stuff, only for that plan to go to hell in the first few minutes.

I will admit that Lethal Company is not the kind of game that is going to appeal to everyone and if I had been playing this on my own, I do not think it would have been as much fun. With tight and “simple” gameplay, this feels fun to play, but there is a real addictive element here as you and your buddies try to get that one extra bit of loot before the ship takes off and leaves you guys stranded at the mercy of the monsters!

Pros:

  • This is such a great game to play with your friends
  • I liked having to be crafty with the items I had
  • It is the kind of game where you just want “one more game”
  • Even for an early access game, it is very polished and has a decent amount of content

Cons:

  • I do feel it needs to be played with friends to be appreciated
  • A bit more story would be cool
