Time travel, dystopias, Final Fantasy-like combat, and even a secret cult lie hidden in the wonderful mess that is Kanye Quest 3030. That said, sometimes, you’ve got to know when weird gets too weird, and this can cause some casual players to feel left outside of an elaborate inside joke.

Fly to the Future

The plot of Kanye Quest 3030 begins innocently enough: Kanye West, renowned rapper and self-proclaimed lyrical genius, goes outside to take out the garbage. What he doesn’t expect is to run into a mysterious portal that transports him to the far future of 3030.

In this dystopic reality, America is run by a clone of Lil B, who claims to be a god. However, when things seem direst, Kanye arrives to fulfill a prophecy that claims that he, along with some of history’s most popular rappers, is destined to defeat the evil Lil B.

Considering the sheer amount of obscure references and inside jokes contained in the game’s narrative, players with just a cursory knowledge of who Kanye West is might feel lost with some parts of the plot.

Story

In Kanye Quest 3030, you take control of none other than Kanye West, the super famous hip-hop producer and rapper. One day, in the year 2010, Kanye wakes up and has a normal morning, playing the piano and getting some breakfast. However, when he goes to take out the trash, he accidentally falls into a teleportation portal. Thrown 1,020 years into the future, Kanye encounters a dangerous new world, where the rapper Lil B has taken over the Earth. When Kanye learns that he is a part of an ancient prophecy, and it is his duty to defeat Lil B, he braves the unknowns of this dystopia with new motivation.

The story of Kanye Quest 3030 is completely ridiculous and is not meant to be taken seriously at all. From this point of view, fans of Kanye, or just hip-hop music in general, will probably think it's an amusing quest. During the game, you'll befriend or battle a bunch of other popular rappers, including Eminem, 2Pac, LL Cool J, etc. These characters are always written as an exaggerated version of their real selves, spewing out silly jokes and stereotypes. If you're knowledgeable in the rap community, Kanye Quest 3030 can be as funny as a game like South Park: The Stick of Truth, but it takes a certain kind of sense of humor for jokes to land. If you're not a huge rap fan, you'll probably be uninterested in general.

Gameplay

Kanye Quest 3030 was created using the popular “RPG Maker” design tools, which many fan-made games also use. This results in a standard, 2D RPG adventure, with the most creative elements being the story, characters, and combat. For most of the game, you explore a futuristic version of Los Angeles, California from a top down view. Like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, a lot of your time exploring is spent talking to characters, discovering rare items, and navigating the overworld. There is plenty of stuff to interact with, leading to funny gags and moments, but don't expect a ton of innovation.

There is some interesting content in the combat, however, which is very much like the Pokemon games. As you make your way through the adventure, new rappers will join your team and can help you during battles. Battles occur both randomly and at designated points in the story, giving you time to level up your characters before major battles. Each rapper on your team has a variety of different skills, which will prove useful depending on your enemy. While most rappers can simply “diss” to deal out damage, they can also take advantage of special Rap Skills and Production Skills. These abilities deal massive elemental damage, buff your team, and more. Overall, the battle system in Kanye Quest 3030 is the best part of it, if you're not counting the wacky story.
