Combat Master: Season 1

It can be so hard for a first-person shooter to stand out, but Combat Master: Season 1 is trying its hardest to do just that! What we have here is a free to play first-person shooter, but before that starts ringing alarm bells in your head, I have to tell you right now that this is one of the fairer free to play games that I have played recently. After spending more than a few hours with the game, I felt like I was finally ready to share my thoughts on it and share with you if I am giving it a salute or sending it to the brig!

The Elephant In The Room!

Ok, before we really get into what I think about Combat Master: Season 1 from a gameplay and presentational point of view, we have to address the free to play aspect of the game. Now, I played this for several hours and never spent a penny and I still managed to have a good game. The idea here is that the game is supported by seasons, think of it like a battle pass system like we have with something like Fortnite or Overwatch and you will get the idea. Those who partake in this get more guns, skins, and so on that they can use whereas those of us who play the game for free just get the basics. It is a fair way to do free to play in my opinion.

The Need For Speed

What I liked best about the gameplay of Combat Master: Season 1 was the speed at which you run around the map. The game reminds me of the more quicker paced Call of Duty games like Advanced Warfare, Infinite Warfare, or even the later Black Ops games. The movement feels great and I greatly appreciated that they let me tinker with the controls to just the way that I wanted. The core gameplay of running around and shooting feels great, it arguably comes closer to Call of Duty’s gameplay than any other first-person shooter that has tried.

Basic Rations

As I did not pay for the season/battle pass in Combat Master: Season 1, I did only get the basics when it came to loadouts and there is not exactly a ton of guns here for players like me. However, rather than completely looking at that as a negative, I am going to say that it made it much easier for me to pick a weapon and get into a game. The core gameplay here is fun and I did play with a couple of friends and we enjoyed our time with the game quite a great deal. Although, if I am being honest, I was never really tempted to spend money on the season/battle pass. Your typical first-person shooter game modes are here, but the main menu is kind of clunky, but once you figure it out, you do get into games pretty quickly.

Anyone Can Play

One of the things that is pretty cool about Combat Master: Season 1 is that the idea of the game is that this is a first-person shooter that anyone can play. I am not talking about this being a quick, pick up and play style of game, although it kind of is once you get past the rather clunky menu system. The game is designed with running sooth first and foremost and running smoothly on any kind of PC setup. I have a decent PC and noticed that the game did run nice and smooth, granted it looked like a rather generic kind of first-person shooter, but I think the “art style” does mean that when tinkering with setting, anyone is going to be able to enjoy this in decent quality.

7.5

I have played a ton of first-person shooters over the years and I feel like I am in a position where I know the good ones from the bad ones and I have to say that Combat Master: Season 1 is not one of the bad ones. It is not the greatest I have played, but I was certainly entertained by it, but if I am being honest, I would probably not play this over Call of Duty or Overwatch 2. However, when the next update drops, I would not be against checking it out.

Pros:

  • I liked the free to play model they have here
  • The design of the game means that it will run well on most machines
  • My and my friends did have fun with this
  • The game is fast paced and that is something I liked about it

Cons:

  • The game while fun is not going to steal me away from COD or Overwatch
  • After a while will free players be at a major disadvantage to those who pay for the seasons?
