A series of grisly murders brings Lara into conflict with a sinister Alchemist from the past, and a secret alliance of powerful individuals shrouded in mystery. At the center of these mysteries are the Obscura Paintings – five 14th century pieces of art that the Alchemist is desperate to repossess. Accused of the murder of her one time mentor, Werner Von Croy, Lara becomes a fugitive on the run. Pursued by the police, she follows the Alchemist into a dark world of blood, betrayal and vengeance where it is up to her to defeat this unholy alliance, and stop them from unleashing their incredible powers on the world.

As in past Tomb Raider games, Angel of Darkness introduces new gameplay features, such as the opportunity to beef up Lara's abilities. Every leap across a perilous gap, for example, incrementally enhances that ability and lets her jump further the next time. If she falls short, she can hold onto the ledge on the other side, but a new grab meter only allows her to do so for a brief period before she must climb up or fall off.

Her other new moves include the ability to hug walls and peek around corners as she sneaks through certain levels. While in stealth mode, she can also come up behind enemies and take them out quickly, before they realize what's happening. Another never-before-seen feature appears when Lara meets other characters: different response options appear for you to choose from, which gives the game a role-playing feel. Those characters treat Lara differently depending on the answers you select.

Angel of Darkness also introduces a new tomb raider, Kurtis Kent, whom you control during certain levels. He sports abilities that Lara doesn't have, such as psychic powers that enable him to see items in other places and a telekinetic streak that helps him wield his sword with greater skill. Raised as an initiate of an ancient order called Lux Veritatis, he swore revenge after the group's membership, including his father, was wiped out. Lux Veritatis supposedly hid the 15th century Obscure Paintings that Von Croy was looking for when he died; naturally, his path intersects with Lara's.
