Snow Bros.

Nasty old King Acchicchi has invaded once peaceful Snow Land, swiped the beautiful twin Princesses, Pri Pri and Pchi Pchi, and put the land into a deep freeze. Instead of sittin' around and chillin', Princes Nick and Tom set out to rescue their beloved babes and put the bad guys on ice. They're the Snow Brothers!

Chill Out

Slip on your gloves and get ready for mindless fun in a winter wonderland for snow bunnies and hot dogs alike. One brother can go it alone, but for the ultimate frosty fun team up for two player simultaneous action in this cool title based on the arcade hit.

The Brothers must battle through five levels, each with ten different rounds to clear. Each round is a giant room with a different configuration. Your view of the action is from the side. And what a view it is! Gorgeous colors and super-cool enemies abound in every area. From the fire-spit-ting gargoyles to the fuzzy knife-tossing blue meanies who turn into whirling cyclones, each enemy packs its own tricks of the trade and personality. At the end of every ten rounds there's a no-holds-barred battle with a giant boss monster.

ProTips:

  • In rounds where the brothers have to face the fuzzy blue enemies that turn into cyclones, Nick and Tom should try to eliminate these guys immediately -- before they turn into whirling dervishes.

  • If you can jump on top of a snowball and make it to the top of this level, you can freeze this snowball-tossing enemy and earn a special bonus.

  • The strategy for beating each boss is similar. Freeze the tiny enemies the boss sends after you and roll the snow boulders back at the boss.

  • Play the slot machines between rounds to earn special items.

Cool Dudes

Gameplay is similar to Bubble Bobble -- the Brothers must plaster all of the enemies in each area to earn a one-way ticket to the next area. Nick and Tom are armed with only one major weapon: snow! But wait'll you see what they can do with it! The Brothers toss it at enemies, roll it into man-sized boulders, and send the boulders thundering down slopes, across ledges, and every which way to knock out enemies.

  • Nick and Tom can toss snowballs in an am, which means you can hit enemies with some well aimed shots -- even when there's a barrier between them and you.

  • If Nick or Tom can manage to make a snowball and get it to ricochet back and forth in a confined area, they can earn tons of extra points.

  • If the Brothers can manage to wipe out an entire round-full of enemies with one snowboulder they'll earn a special bonus surprise!

  • The Brothers can make a snowball and then hop on for a ride down a snowy slope -- wiping out the bad guys in the resulting avalanche.

  • Don't forget that the Brothers can lift snowballs and move them to higher levels.

  • Don't relax too quickly after you clear a round of enemies. If anything hits you before you zap to the next round you'll still lose a life!

Tasty Frozen Treats

The Brothers can also grab special items like Popsicles, Pies, Hot Sauce, and potions that give them different special abilities and make their lives a little easier. At the end of each level they can also play the slot machines to earn bonus items.

  • The Red bottle gives the Brothers super speed.
  • The Green bottle, Hot Sauce, gives the Brothers indigestion... and super special abilities!
  • If a little Snow Face appears during the round and Nick or Tom can grab it, they'll warp to a bonus round.

There's No Business like Snow Business

Snow Brothers has the same magical feel of classic games like Bubble Bobble and the Marios. Everything about this game, except the music, is top-notch. The difficulty level won't make you tear your hair out, but there's more than enough fun to entertain even the most advanced gamers. Check it out and do a little slip-pin' and a slidin' of your own.

Game Reviews

This version of Snow Bros has been released by Tengen in 1993. Snow Bros is a platform game like Bubble Bobble. This version of the game included new background music, additional levels and cutscenes not found in the earlier releases.

You must eliminate all the enemies on each level of the game by rolling the enemies into snowballs and smashing them against the walls.

Every 10th level of the game have a Boss. Boss attacks the player with ordinary enemies, which the player must turn into snowballs and roll into the Boss.

Snow Bros, is coming to all the systems! This two-player game has Nick and Tom as the brothers, using their abilities to throw energy shots at their opponents, turning them into snowballs!

Kick these snowballs oft the edge to kill them while collecting power-ups such as speed, power shots and distance shots. Your enemies can jump around on the platforms and even blow fire and turn into whirlwinds!

Invincibility Code - To become invincible in this "cool" game for GameBoy, do this code. When the title screen appears, press and hold LEFT, DOWN, A and B at the same time, then press START. No enemies will be able to hurt you when you do this code!

  • Type: Action
  • Available: Autumn 1991
  • Levels: 10+
  • Difficulty: Average

This cold setting for an NES title has you tossing snowballs at the other creatures trying to pack them in and fling the freshly made snowboulder at the other enemies. As you proceed through the levels, the action gets even more intense as the enemies get different powers like fiery breath and other skills to stop you with. Use your mastery of the snow and end this terror once and for all.

Snow Brothers reminds me a lot of similar maze-action games like Bubble Bobble that take a simple theme and elevate it with a seemingly endless variety of scoring and point incentives. The game still suffers from a fair level of repetition, but it is a good diversion for awhile.

7

The arcade game was a blast. Once in a while I like no-brainer games and this is one which I can sit down and play through dozens of levels just to relax. Not a lot of concentration needed. The execution of the game is very good and it is a blast to play. Great bosses!

6

This game is a bit like Bubble Bobble and Parasol Stars. The graphics are cute and the game plays very well. The graphics and sound are not spectacular but the game play is solid and easy to get into. The addition of bosses to this type of game is a definite plus.

Snow Brothers isn't a bad game for the money. Even through the overall idea isn't topnotch, the execution is coordinated extremely well. The graphics are reminiscent of a rehashed MegaMan title. You'll enjoy the cheerful sound track even despite the 8-bit sound limits.

The 1990 Toaplan coin-op favorite will soon be coming to the Nintendo! Capcom has grabbed the rights and expects to get the soft to the stores this fall. Both you and a friend can simultaneously play the part of Nick and Tom as you climb up to the top of the screen. Shoot the enemies with your gun to freeze them, and turn them into snowballs which start rolling down the ramps and over everything (including you!) in their way!

Snow Bros is a video game released in 1990 by Toaplan. The game seems to be similar with Bubble Bobble, supports two players, and is actually really fun to play. The fact that it was ported on lots of other platforms says a lot about how many people thought this game is a cracker.

The game was ported for many other platforms soon after the release. Capcom released the game for Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. Amiga, Atari, ST, Commodore, GX4000 and ZX Spectrum developed their own version of the game in the same year. The version for Sega Genesis was released by Tengen in 1993 with additional levels, new background music and cut scenes which were missing from the arcade version.

Two players take each the control of one of the snowmen, Nick and Tom, and can throw with snow at the enemies. When the enemy is completely covered in snow, they turn into a snowball and lose the game. If the enemy is only partial covered in snow, he or she will only be able to move after they shake the snow off.

The players can roll every enemy who turned into a giant snowball. Once this is done, the enemy will rebound off walls and, at some point in time, probably shatter against a wall. If the snowball hits other enemies, they are eliminated from the game as well. The target of the two characters is to fully defeat the enemies. Once they manage to, lots of money, in form of large green bills, will start falling from the sky. They are worth 10.000 points for each player, which is the most a player can get as a bonus.

The game is based on levels. A boss will have to be defeated after every 10 levels. They are more difficult to defeat and can take more hits than the normal enemies.

If the main characters bowl an enemy over, they may drop different lanterns. The color of the lantern tells the player which power-up he or she can acquire. The effects of most of the power-ups disappears after the player loses a life.

The levels have to be finished fast. If it takes too much time, an evil pumpkin will come out and try to kill Nick and Tom. The pumpkin head is unfortunately invincible, and at some point in time will even spawn ghosts that can travel through the levels and try to kill the player character. Players can only get rid of it if they eliminate the rest of the enemies and move on to the next level.

The game was fairly popular back then when it was released, and got many good reviews. GameSpot users rated the game with a total feedback of 8.9 out of 10, but unfortunately the game for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was not as successful as the one ported on other platforms. The game for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis was reviewed by the users with a total feedback of 6.8.
