Happy! Happy! Joy! Joy!

Ren and Stimpy are invading the land of video games. The smash hit cartoon series is coming to three different formats: NES, Super NES and GameBoy. Follow the adventures of a deranged chihuahua and his alleycat sidekick. The game play will be based on the cartoon series and will feature levels resembling many of your favorite skits from the show.

The first level seems to have been taken from the "Space Madness" skit. You control Stimpy as he makes his way through five sections of outer space danger.

From there, you control Ren on the surface of an unknown planet where aliens await. Throughout the levels there are power-ups and bonus games that let you build up your supply of lives and stamina. Ren and Stimpy for the GameBoy also features hilarious cinema intermissions and digitized voices of many characters from the show.

Happy, happy, joy, joy! Muddy Mudskipper is giving away a free time machine, and all Ren and Stimpy need to win it is 47 million Gritty Kitty proofs of purchase!

Ren and Stimpy scour through their backyard and The Big City, collecting Gritty Kitty bags, while battling wasps, bulldogs, and Crockostimpies with Stimpy's hairballs. After they've collected enough bags, and defeated the Zookeeper, they set out on their mission to stop Muddy Mudskipper from ruining history.

Once in the machine, our heroes must steer the contraption through the portals of time, while firing toast weapons at mosquitoes, hourglasses, and other obstacles. Ren and Stimpy must use the time machine after each level, in order to get to the next one.

In the first zone, The Haunted House Ren and Stimpy run through a graveyard wasting ghosts and goblins, while collecting cash and avoiding falling tombstones and open graves. In the next level, Monkey See, Monkey Don't, our pals visit the zoo and deal with angry monkeys in order to collect even more money. In the last zone, The Untamed World, their quest continues as they island hop to their final romp through time.

Within the game there are secret passwords and hidden mini-games, but so what? The concept of the game is OK, but there really is no point to it. Hey, I like Ren and Stimpy as much as the next guy, but this game was so bad, I almost coughed up a hairball.

This game suffers from the "What-the-heck-do-I-do-now" syndrome. This cart has some entertaining features like the spaceship shooter sequence, and the colorful graphics, but I wasn't completely entertained. Face it, the 8-Bit can do only so much, and this game is only a bit over average. Ren & Stimpy isn't drawn very well. But the controls are pretty good. Overall, this is a typical NES game.

If you're a big Ren & Stimpy fan, and still a hardcore NES player, then R&S might appeal to you, but otherwise, the overall game play is just average, and isn't anything that is going to knock your socks off. The sound is okay but gets repetitions after a while. There's not much of a plot to the game, it's just one kooky adventure after the next. One of the major drawbacks to the game is that it is only a one-player game.

For an 8-Bit game, Ren and Stimpy isn't a bad game, but why bother anyway? Gamers want more colors and better sound and this one doesn't have either one. The only thing keeping me from giving this a lower number is the fairly decent game play. This game was supposed to be funny and it isn't, and I'm a pretty big R&S fan who would laugh at almost anything these guys do. But, sorry. I got no charge!

It's an action game. No, it's a shooter! No, it's Ren and Stimpy on the NES! Hey I know it's only 8-Bit, but what the heck! The graphics are excellent (for the NES, that is!) and the game play is awesome. You can pick up weapons and other icons, too! This is a great game for everyone who is still clinging to their old NES. The level of difficulty may be a bit too easy for a lot of gamers, though.
