Too hot for just the NES, The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is now available to razzle and dazzle Genesis players. Bart and his family are back to battle slimy, putrid space monsters that have infiltrated the town of Springfield!

Doin' the Bartman

Space mutants have taken over the bodies of Springfield's townsfolk and are collecting specific Earth items to construct a weapon that will enable them take over the planet! When Bart slips on his X-ray glasses, he sees the creepazoids for what they really are! The Bartmeister's on his own in this moderately paced, action side-scroller. He's got to free the possessed neighbors, remove the coveted items, and convince his family that the alien menace is for real!

Each of this game's five levels takes place in a different part of Springfield. In each level, while working against the clock, Bart must seek out purple colored items and either cover them up or spray paint them red. The Springfield Shopping Mall offers a bevy of hats. The Krustyland Amusement park is full of innocuous balloons. The Springfield Museum of Natural History houses valuable "Exit" signs coveted by the aliens. The Springfield Nuclear Power Plant holds power rods, which Bart must collect and return to the reactor! Also, if Bart collects enough letters to spell out a family member's name, they will come to his aid when he comes face-to-face with an alien Level Boss.

You need sharp reflexes to succeed. Many of the objects Bart needs are cleverly hidden and require quick, tricky jumps to reach.

Power On, Dude

Fortunately, there's an abundance of bonus items and Power-ups to aid the Bartman. Collect hidden Krusty the Clown icons and/or 15 coins to earn a 1 -- Up. Weapons such as cans of Spray Paint, Slingshots, and Dart Guns, and special items such as Keys, Whistles, Wrenches, and Rockets also come in handy. It requires clever thinking to figure out where and how to use these items. Experimentation is the key to success.

ProTips:

  • Use the Wrench to open the fire hydrant, which washes away the awning's purple paint
  • Use the whistle near the Springfield Retirement Home. You just might "cash" in on something big!

Deja Vu or New?

The Genesis version looks and plays almost exactly like its NES counterpart. However, the Genesis' 16-bit horsepower gives this version a definite edge on graphics and music. These twin tendencies also mean that all the boffo tricks and tips NES players have discovered work for bro-Genesis! So, NESers, keep your traps shut and don't ruin the surprise for the Genesis vidiots.

Although the graphics and sound don't tax the Genesis' capabilities, this game is visually enjoyable and challenging. The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants is simple in plot, but full of enough twists, turns and surprises to delight and frustrate you! So what if it's the same as the NES version?! Don't have a cow, man!!

Game Reviews

Hang up those capes and spider webs super-heroes of yesteryear 'cause the baddest of bad boys, Bart Simpson, is here to take command of your post. The little bug-eyed guy is just in time, too, because a mass of tentacle Space Mutants has just paid Springfield an unexpected visit.

Don't Have a Purple Cow, Man

In this action/adventure combo Bart discovers that five sections of Springfield, including the local shopping Mall, Krusty-land Amusement Park, and the Museum of Natural History are teeming with aliens disguised as humans. The trouble is nobody but Bart (via his handy X-Ray Specs) can see 'em. Alas, the Bart man is on his own in this one player game, and unless he works fast to collect and disguise various items such as hats, exit signs, and purple things that the aliens are after to help build their Ultimate weapon, Earth will fall into their slimy grasp!

Bart Grows Up

We were more than pleasantly surprised to see how Bart's game has matured since the early version we saw in the late summer. The addition of dozens of new obstacles, enemies, and items to be recovered cranked up the challenge factor tremendously.

Spoiled by the prime time animated Simpson's TV series, our expectations for the graphics may have been a little too high. Though the horizontal scrolling graphics aren't bad, they don't knock you outta your chair either. On the upside, Acclaim's done a good job of matching the same color scheme that's used on the series and they've got Bart's walk down pat.

ProTips:

  • To successfully nab Level One's first Krusty the Clown icon, good for an extra life, stand at the far left of the screen, wait for the Zebloid to jump towards the right, then use Barts Super Long Jump to leap onto the garbage can. This gives Bart enough height to reach the ledge where the icon is.

  • Unless you want to get your bottom stung by a bee, take care not to jump directly in front of the first bush, located just past the buildings with the clothes line strung between them.

Aerosol Express

Along with his three main weapons (Spraypaint, a Slingshot, and a Dart Gun) Bart can also purchase a variety of other helpful items such as wrenches and rockets, something to use against enemies like Side Show Bob and the babysitter from hell, Ms. Botz. Making the purchases is simple, it's figuring out how, when, and where to use them that gets your blood boiling -- it's also half the fun.

  • When you want to fire a rocket at something purple, position Bart to the left of the target and make sure his toes are resting on the crack of the sidewalk.

  • Bart likes a good flick, maybe he should stop by the theater at show time(s) to check out the purple attractions.

  • To be safely carried over the wet cement in the Shopping Mall Level, go to the second floating platform and jump up and down three times.

Radical, Man

Bart and his family have come out of the starting gates lookin' strong. There's so much to see and do (don't leave a single shrub, ledge, or garbage can unexplored), that you'll, without a doubt, get many hours of enjoyable game-play under your belt. Besides, how could you resist helping the king of smart alecks prove he's not such a bad guy after all.

Springfield has been invaded by space mutants. Only Bart can see them with the help of his X-ray glasses. On this one-player, side-scrolling adventure, Bart travels through a shopping mall and an amusement park armed with only a spray can and bottle rockets. Bart-ster must convince his family and the town of their impending danger, or it's over, dude!

Hello, fellow humans! Bartholomew J. Simpson here, with a big secret:

Space mutants are invading Springfield!

Yours truly is the only one who can see 'em - so it's up to me to stop 'em. I've gotta spray paint things, get radical on my skateboard, and in general behave like a nuisance, man. It's a good thing I've got the rest of the Simpsons to help me out.

So if you're a decent person, a patriot, save the Earth! Buy this game!

Don't have a cow, man!

The Simpson's are coming to the Genesis and this time Bart must save Springfield from The Space Mutants! The main man, Bart, is having a good old time causing mischief, when suddenly before his eyes, a giant U.F.O. lands and releases an entire horde of space mutant martians that are disguised as normal human beings. Their job is to wreak havoc in the streets of Bart's home town.

Playing the part of Bart, you are the only one who can save Springfield from the dreaded space mutants. Thus, your job is to guide Bart through the avenues and byways of Springfield to take out this alien menace! Along the way, you most find spray paint cans that cover the purple alien objects to destroy their harmful effects. Also, using a pair of x-ray glasses that allow you to see through the clothing of humans, you must determine who is real or mutant. Bart (you) must enter shops and purchase equipment to help him on his quest. You even get to take a ride on your skateboard for a mad dash through the sidewalks of Springfield spray painting the space mutants purple. Remember, the fate of human mankind, as well as your family, rests in your hands!

For a great license like the Simpsons, one would expect a great game. This GameBoy cart just isn't up to snuff with the other GameBoy carts. It's way too hard for the average player, and the younger kids who this is probably aimed at will get frustrated. Your slingshot just won't hit most of the enemies. This game is average at best. Bart fans would be able to like it, but I for one, couldn't get into it.

5

Yowza, this is a toughie. While I always welcome a challenging game, this one can be frustrating. Nintendo may be trying to market the GameBoy as the ultimate yuppie toy, but games like this are way too challenging for kids. This game also suffers from slow responsiveness, average graphics and buzzy sounds. If you must own every Bart game in existence, you may have fun with it, but don't expect greatness.

5

Let's see. I uh, don't like it. Honestly, I don't even think Bart Simpson fans are going to like it. The obvious flaw is the game play, which is, well, simply put, bad. The thing is you're provided with a slingshot weapon which seems to be launching styrofoam balls at enemies because they seem to miss a lot, and when they do, they don't seem to do much damage. This offers gamers nothing but frustration.

5

This game suffers from poor programming. For example, when Bart needs to use his slingshot, it takes forever to fire the darn thing! To make matters worse, its range is horrible. This is just one example of what makes this game a questionable buy. The graphics are decent, for the GameBoy, and the difficulty level is high partially because of the poor game play. There are no continues! Not a wise investment.

Gang way, man, Bart's on your NES!

Talk about trouble! Our hero, Bart Simpson, was leisurely walking down a street in Springfield when he overheard some strange voices. Looking over a fence, Bart put on his trusty Xray glasses and saw aliens planning to take over the Earth! Without his glasses, they looked like normal human beings. It's up to you to guide Bart in his quest to stop the invading aliens from building their ultimate doomsday weapon! No way, man!

Master tip # 087

Stand in front of the movie theater when the timer reaches either 400 or 200 and a purple Boy Scout will appear!

Bart vs. The Space Mutants is a platform game where you play the role of Bart Simpson (from the TV show The Simpsons) and must stop the Space Mutants from invading Springfield. On each of the five levels, Bart must collect (or get rid of) the ingredients that the Space Mutants are planning to use to build their machine, such as purple objects or balloons. He also has to collect enough "proof" of the aliens existence (brown coins left behind when they are jumped on), so his family members will help him when he meets a boss (characters such as Nelson and Sideshow Bob). This ain't be easy, since the Space Mutants are "using" human bodies as disguise. In order to discover who are the real Space Mutants, Bart must use his X-ray Specs. The ways Bart can get rid of those objects sought by the Space Mutants are numerous. For instance, in the first stage, Bart must get rid of purple objects. He can dye them red, cover them, wash them, etc. Some even involve a little puzzle solving, like playing a trick on Moe to make him get out of the bar. Bart has some coins also, that can be used in many ways throughout the game, like buying things, getting devices operating, etc. Those coins are essential to solve some puzzles in the game
