If it's hard for you to take wrestling seriously, take a serious look at Saturday Night Slam Masters! This solid Capcom game rolled through the arcades quickly, but it's a sure-fire bet to establish turf on the SNES.

They've Got A Crush on You

The stars of the show are eight outrageous wrestlers who are ready to inflict maximum damage. The object is simple: Crush your opponent's body and ego, then pin him to the mat. If you can scare up four wrestling nuts and a multiplayer adapter, the Slam Masters' Battle Royale is a kick and a half. Slam's masterful orchestration of four-player moves makes it one of the best four-player games yet.

ProTips:

  • If you get knocked down, immediately press Up or Down to roll away from a pin. If you must, roll out of the ring!
  • When you pin your opponent, continuously press Attack and Pin to make his escape harder.
  • If you're getting your keister handed to you, doubletap Left or Right to run away.
  • Practice your techniques (especially the some- times-tough Super Slam Techniques) on a dummy. Naaaah, not your kid brother -- start a two-player match but play solo.

The fighting's fierce and fun thanks to the diverse controls. Naturally, you can slug or kick away by jamming the Attack button, but each character has a cool Special Attack and an awesome Super Slam Technique, requiring you to grab an opponent and quickly execute control-pad moves. The result is an entertaining variety of nasty airborne kicks, bone- crushing shoulder throws, and face-mashing slams into the mat. Some of the controls and fighting techniques are noticeably lifted from Street Fighter (directional-pad thumb sweeps with button presses). For example, El Stingray's Jalapeno Comet uses Ryu's Fireball controls. The defense isn't sophisticated, but if you're pinned, you can kick out by maniacally jamming pad directionals and buttons.

If your opponent climbs the turnbuckle to taunt you, use your jump attack to knock him back down to earth.

Show Time!

The graphics will grab ya with their slick Street Fighter style. The wrestlers look buffed and bad, and each one has unique graphic touches, such as Oni's Japanese devil mask and Rasta's pet monkey.

The sounds are sparse, but what's there pumps you up for the rumble ahead. Individual theme music combines with the lively crowd cheers to produce energetic opening ceremonies for every match.

Slam the Man

You may wonder if TV wrestling is for real, but the action here is "for real" enough to chase any other wrestling game out of the ring. If your Street Fighter fightin' is getting too serious, jam with Slam!

While this has been tailored so it vaguely resembles pro wrestling, the fighting is closer to Street Fighter, with wild, unrealistic attacks - many of which share the same button combinations as SF moves.

The characters might not be as big, but this game is better overall than the arcade version. The control is top-notch, and the Four-player Battle Mode had me spending hours after work bashing my colleagues, I wish there was a decisive ending when you defeat all the opponents. Slam Masters plays as good as it looks. Some of the moves are really hard to pull off in the middle of a match, but it's worth trying.

For wrestling that's fun, you really can't beat Slam Masters. It's a great translation from the arcade and in many ways, like control, it's very much improved. There aren't a whole lot of special moves, but hey, this isn't exactly Street Fighter II here. This game is an absolute riot with four players! As it stands, the game is fun for parties and gatherings, but it's not one I'd want to sit down and play all day.

Capcom releases Slam Masters and it's as good as any other arcade translation - complete with virtually identical graphics and sound. This has seen a bit of an improvement with better game play. Even with all the positive things going for it, there are a few things I didn't like. First are the "miracle" holds and throws the computer can do to you! Cheap! Secondly, there could've been more moves. But, it's still good.

Wrestling at its best! The translation from the arcade to the Super NES is so close that you might start looking for the coin slot. All of the characters are here with their special moves and tricks. You can even play with up to four players - slam test! The graphics and animations are superb, can't get better. The only problem I have with this is that it's too easy, being Sushi-X you know. Overall, a very good game.
