Game Reviews

  • Manufacturer: Flying Edge
  • Machine: Genesis

The game offers 32 teams representing countries from around the globe. Unlike the SNES version, there's no announcer replaying key footage between halves, and you can't modify teams or substitute players either.

It seems like there are as many 16-bit soccer sims entering the marketplace as there are teams vying for the upcoming World Cup competition. Acclaim's Champions World Class Soccer is the latest to enter the fray, and while it's not the best in the field, it's a solid adversary.

All of soccer's sights and sounds are well represented, from the roars and chants of the crowd to the grunt of a player as he's hauled down from behind. The players look and react very realistically, and a three-quarter overhead view of the field lets you closely follow the action. The screen shows enough of the field so you can see what's happening in your immediate vicinity, but not so much that the players are reduced to microscopic size. You can also check out what's going on outside your field of vision with a radar at the top of the screen.

Smooth and easy controls make game play enjoyable. The only downside is a slight delay between your pressing a button and the required action taking place on-screen. Often a defender can step in and win the ball within this less-than-a-second delay. Another plus comes from an unlikely place - the referee. He's not as whistle-happy here as in most other soccer sims. Sure, an occasional yellow card or penalty shot is handed out, but for the most part, the game is free of interruptions.

The biggest flaw in Champions is its lack of bells and whistles. Besides a replay feature, four language options, and the ability to toggle things such as penalties and game length, the game offers little else. One player can participate in an exhibition or tournament, while two players can only compete against each other in exhibition mode. And while there are 32 teams from which to choose, you can't substitute players or alter the teams in any way.

But as a whole, the lack of options in Champions World Class Soccer doesn't send it to the bottom of the rankings. The realistic graphics and sound effects, combined with smooth control and accurate game play, put Champions among the soccer elite.

Acclaim has set out to create a brand new soccer game. Pushing the technical threshold of the Super NES back, Champions World Class Soccer looks very impressive. To give you complete control, a large number of realistic moves are at your disposal. Like in the real game, you head, knee, or even flip kick the ball. Everything is at your fingertips.

Using above average graphics, and a different visual perspective, Champions World Class Soccer tries to stand out above the crowd. If you have a passion for the high speed thrill of Soccer, then Acclaim's Champions World Class Soccer should appeal to you. This stands out as one of the better Soccer attempts on the market.

Acclaim revolutionized the hoops market with NBA Jam. While Champions World Class Soccer for the Genesis isn't of that high caliber, you should still check this game out. CWC Soccer has all the key ingredients -- the topnotch graphics, the super sound, the good controls -- that make it a game to be reckoned with in the soccer world.

Classy Game

Champions World Class features the world's top 24 soccer countries, including the powerful German team and the mediocre U.S. squad. Each team is rated in speed, offense, and defense, and the ratings reflect their real-life counterparts.

ProTip: When going for a steal, don't tackle your opponent. Just bump into him, and you'll come away with the ball.

CWC's SNES version was disappointing because the difficult controls took the fun out of the game. Fortunately, Acclaim has revamped the controls for the Genesis version, making it a much more realistic and satisfying experience. Passing, scoring, dribbling -- everything is better and easier on the Genesis.

Also improved are the graphics and sounds. The graphics in particular get high marks; the players are nicely detailed, and their movements (especially for special moves) are as realistic as those in any soccer game. The excellent sound includes crowd noise that is based upon the rowdy reactions of the European fans, adding even more realism to the game.

  • If you steal the ball from your opponent when you're near your own goal, hit Button C to blast the ball downfield. It'll go farther than a normal pass.
  • Attack your opponent's goal at a 45-degree angle. When you reach the penalty box, press C twice and aim toward the back post. You'll score nearly every time.

We Are the Champions

If you're looking for a realistic soccer game for the Genesis, then your search is over. Champions World Class is a serious World Cup contender.

Champions World Class Soccer for the SNES looks good, has excellent sound, and offers above-average control, so you'd think this game would be a World Cup finalist. Unfortunately, frustrating game play sinks the FunFactor to the bottom of the league standings.

Out of Bounds

World Class Soccer is frustrating because it's so difficult to keep control of the ball. All of its good features and options are nullified by the difficult game play. Even Pele would have a hard time scoring in this game.

ProTip: Press X for an extra burst of speed to catch up to an opponent and take the ball away.

The problem stems from the physical style of game play. Because the game allows so much extra contact without a penalty, it's almost impossible to dribble or pass the ball downfield on offense. No matter what player or team you've got, the opposition can easily steal the ball by bumping into your player.

  • When going for a steal, don't tackle your opponent Just bump into him, and you'll come away with the ball.
  • If your opponent is near your goal and you steal the ball, press Y to clear the ball from his attack zone and end his scoring threat.

Apart from this fundamental problem, the controls are merely decent. On defense you can't switch players quickly enough, while on offense it's almost impossible to shoot on the run. The only saving grace is that your players respond well once they have the ball, as long as no defenders are near.

Get Your Kicks

The graphics get high marks. The players are nicely detailed and their movements, especially when performing special moves, are excellent. The players are easy to see, so you can always tell which player you control.

The sound is also top-notch. The crowd noise is based upon the rowdy European fans, adding a touch more realism to the game.

If you're in the market for thrilling SNES soccer, look elsewhere. Despite World Class's few good points, the bottom line is the FunFactor, and that's where this game trips up.

Champions World Class Soccer brings together 32 international teams to compete in either an Exhibition or Tournament format.

Once you choose your team, select from four different formations, whether fouls or offsides are called, and either 15, 30, or 45 minute halves. Play then begins on a horizontal field, with players being able to perform shoves and slide tackles, bicycle kicks, headers, passes, traps, throw-ins and corner kicks. You can also elect to have your goalie set on one of three different levels: automatic, semi-automatic or manual.

Other notable features include a transparent radar display at the top of the screen and support for four languages: English, Spanish, French or German.

Passwords will allow you to continue Tournament progress.

Champions World Class Soccer features:

  • Features eight different language choices
  • 32 international teams
  • All kinds of realistic soccer strategies and formations
  • Referees that keep the action clean and the game under control
  • Fully interactive goalkeepers
