Castlevania

So, you want to play Castlevania by Konami? Well, let me tell you all about it and explain just how great an idea that is. Let us go then, you and I, and jump head first into one of the ultimate classic games that spawned a franchise like few have achieved. We’ll be looking a little at the Castelvania-Konami relationship, the gameplay on the original 1986 NES version and what made this simple 1996 title a mainstay for the gaming community. Grab your whip and let’s get it done.

Gameplay

Castlevania is one of the original platformers and it shows a special style and class that is rare for games of this age. Coming from the same era of games as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Legend of Zelda and Adventure Island, this title has a much greater control than some others on what it wants to show and what it wants to player to do. Even if you don’t get it all straight away, a couple of tries in and you’ll be a pro. That being said, the game is not easy, you have to make use of your limited abilities with walking, jumping and whipping in order or avoid and combat enemies. I will be honest with you and say that this game is pretty hard, it requires you to repeatedly fail and retry till you know all the secrets and tactics.

Patience is the key

Throughout the game, you will find that there are a lot of things to pick up, hearts, food for health, backup weapons from defeated enemies that you may utilise in battle. There are also hidden items, temporary invincibility, upgrades to the whip’s length and damage, instant destruction of all enemies on screen and even increased uses for the backup weapon. As you progress, you will fight many different beasts, that behave differently and react to their environment in a unique way. You will also fight different bosses from Dracula’s army, these vary in design and function but make no mistake, they are all pretty difficult to beat.

Story

The story of the game is simple; you play a man named Simon Belmont and you must traverse Dracula’s castle and defeat the beast himself at the top. The game is divided into six blocks of three stages, making a total of 18 stages. A pretty length game for all intents and purposes.

Art Style

The art style in the game is interesting but definitely clear to follow. The opening is so-so but once you get inside the castle and see the huge walls with chunks missing with ripped drapes and broken columns, you really get a feeling of being inside an enormous castle as the set design is surprisingly brilliant.

Game Reviews

The first game in the series, Castlevania introduced the vampire killer Simon Belmont of the famed House of Belmont and his nemesis, Count Dracula. It also established the series' reputation for providing killer bosses: Frankenstein, Mummy, and Grim Reaper are some of the enemies you'll face.

Castlevania features simple yet addictive gameplay. The controls are excellent and simple: One button for jumps, the other for attacks. Ah, the glorious days of 8-bit: Tinny mono sound and no multi-scrolling!
