The first effort from a non-licensed Nintendo company (Color Dreams), offers game play that is attempts to duplicate other side-scrolling action games.

Captain Comic must overcome obstacles and enemies, find weapons, and make it to the goal in each level of play. Multi-level landscapes scroll by, and provide additional dangers as you fight your way to the game's conclusion.

Captain Comic has most of the elements of a good action/adventure game, but the execution is poor. The scrolling zooms by too quickly to appreciate the detail in the backgrounds and the enemies are too few and far between. A good try that just falls a little bit too short.

Although I can appreciate what Color Dreams has tried to do, this game ends up looking like a prototype that is half-completed. The challenge is limited by a small number of attackers and the game itself plays like a better-than-average NES game.

Combine lousy game play and poorly drawn characters with average backgrounds and a theme that is sorely lacking power-ups and Bosses and you get a nice first try from Color Dreams. I expected more and hope they do better with their next game.

The Adventures of Captain Comic looks like it has all of the necessary parts to run, but none of them are in great condition. The characters, backgrounds, music, and game play are all there, but CC just doesn't have the depth of similar efforts like Castlevania or Mega Man.

Game Reviews

The Adventures of Captain Comic (or just Captain Comic) is a classic platform game which is known for being one of the first side-scrolling games made for the IBM PC. This version was published by Color Dreams as an unlicensed title. In the game, the player takes control of Captain Comic, who is on a mission to the planet Tambi, to recover three treasures stolen from the planet Omsoc.

Captain Comic follows many standard platformer conventions. The player has health, lives, a score, and a set of useful items. The game is divided into a number of major areas, and each area is divided generally into three smaller "zones". Transitioning between zones plays a short tune and marks a "safe point", since all enemies are removed from the screen and Comic's position is saved.

Comic has twelve "shield" points (health), but each time an enemy hits him, two points are removed. Once the shield has been reduced to zero, Comic is still alive, but will die on the next hit. (Thus Comic must be hit seven times to die, from full shield). Occasionally, shields can be found which instantly replenish Comic's health to full, or if it is already full, grant him an extra life. Comic starts the game with four lives, and can go up to a maximum of five. If Comic is killed by either falling off the bottom of the screen, or being hit with no shield points remaining, a life is lost and he is returned to the point where he last entered this zone. If all lives are lost, the game ends.
