Nobody could have predicted the phenomenal success of humble, little Roller Coaster Tycoon. Such simple, addictive games had been tried before; even the whole amusement park idea had been done in Theme Park, but RCT exploded with unmatched success. Legions of gamers enjoyed the colorful graphics, the simple but ever-so-opinionated patrons, the easy-to-master financial model, and the thrill of building, testing, and then watching customers enjoy your own roller coaster – or watching with glee as they got sick after their first ride! But it's still an addictive business simulation and it will keep you playing for months on end. You can easily get swamped by the obscene amount of information packed into one game, and be overwhelmed by how hardcore the initial scenarios are, but once you get used to the everyday life of managing theme parks, it's a rollicking challenge.

You start off with about twenty theme parks with their own unique look and tough objective. These are conveniently split into five categories: Beginner, Challenging, Expert, Real and Other. The first three are self-explanatory, Real are parks that are actually in this world, because this game has a Six Flags license, and Other fill into none of these categories, they're just basically parks to mess about, practice and experiment on.

These parks are beautiful. There's farms, derelict castles that you've bought to build a theme park on, funfairs, deserts, mountains, gardens, barren landscapes, water parks… the variety is endless. The objectives are of fairly varying quality too: pay back your large loan, get a certain number of guests, don't let your amount of guests drop below 700…

There's no doubt that the developers have made an absolute gem of a game in Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. They've packed in a scenario editor this time, which allows you to shape a park with its very own mission, which in turn allows you to create your own campaign. This injects dollops of lifespan into an already addictive concept and it increases the amount of time you'll spend in your own land with your own guests and your own rides. There's millions of rides to be built: Transport, Gentle, Rollercoasters, Thrill, Water…

The audio is fantastic. It's that perfect mix of screams, giggles, grumbles and carnival music that brings the scent of cotton candy to your nose every time.
