Touring Car Racing

Get ready for some epic touring car racing action as we look at the best racing games this sub genre has to offer. We love racing games and we have racing games of all different styles, but this is one niche that does not get as much love as it deserves! That is why we looked through the garage that is our game archive and decided to put all of these great racing games into their very own collection. If you love this style of racing you are in for one heck of a treat here!

We decided to take it all the way back to where the touring car racing game popularity kicked off and that is with TOCA Touring Car Championship which was a huge deal when it was released on the PlayStation and PC in the 90s…. and to a lesser extent the Game Boy too! This offered fun racing action that walked the line of being realistic, but not at the expense of the fun. This was a true golden age for racing games with stuff like this, Sega Rally, Colin McRae Rally, and even stuff like Rage Racer all offering racing fans different types of racing action. You will be shocked at how well this first entry in the TOCA series holds up after all these years.

We do not want this touring car racing games collection to just be about the TOCA series, but as we talked about the first game, we have to mention the others. While that first game was truly iconic and an all time classic. We did get a few sequels in TOCA 2 Touring Cars and TOCA Race Driver 3. These are great racing games in their own right and while we know which one we prefer, we feel that you are best playing them all and deciding which one is your favorite. However, we will say that we do think you do not want to skip that original game just because it is “old”!

While we love the TOCA series, we do have to talk about the Grid series too as it is one of the most popular touring car racing series. Codemasters went all in with this giving us the likes of Race Driver: Grid and the less than originally titled, Grid 2, both of which are fun games. It is kind of crazy how Codemasters were just firing on all cylinders for so many years with their racing games as along with Grid they also had the very popular Colin McRae Dirt 2 which was still going strong at this time as well and is even still going to this day, well it has morphed into the EA Sports WRC which is still pretty cool.

While it would be so easy to just focus on the TOCA games or even the Grid series, we do also have some touring car racing games that are a bit more unheard of that we feel are worth checking out as you may find one of them to be your next hidden gem. For example, Race On is a game that captures the whole touring car thing in a more “budget” style. It is a game that is well worth trying if you are on the hunt for a less well known racing game. In that same mold, we also have GTR: FIA GT Racing Game which is really trying to be a deep simulation game for those who love tinkering with their touring cars as they try to take the top spot on the podium.
