Pink, cute, and cuddly as ever, Kirby is back for another joyful adventure in Kirby's Dream Land 3. As the fifth entry in the Kirby series and the final Kirby game to be released on the Super Nintendo, Kirby's Dream Land 3 had a lot to live up to. The previous game, Kirby Super Star, offered a level of variety and quality of gameplay that was unmatched by many other Super Nintendo games. While Kirby's Dream Land 3 might not be as robust with content as other Kirby titles, it still provides a fun and laid-back adventure through the cheerful Planet Popstar.

Main Game Features:

  • 30 stage set across 5 unique levels
  • 9 unique powers to use in battle
  • 2-player cooperative play

Story

Similar to other Super Nintendo games like Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Kirby's Dream Land 3 has a straightforward narrative that sets the tone for the adventure to follow. During yet another relaxing day on Planet Popstar, Kirby and his friend Gooey's fishing trip is interrupted by a giant black mass in the sky. As the shadowy clouds start to envelop Planet Popstar, King Dedede and his army of followers become hostile and dangerous. With the world in utter chaos, Kirby and his friends must defeat the source of the dark mass and save Planet Popstar!

Gameplay

Whereas previous Kirby games offered a variety of modes and mini-games, Kirby's Dream Land 3 is far more linear experience. Players progress through each level one stage at a time, finishing each level with an awesome boss fight. Stages are filled with enemies and hazards, but the level of difficulty is low, providing an easier experience that's great for new gamers. The overall goal of each stage is simple; reach the goal without losing all your health while searching for secrets and items.

All of the classic Kirby gameplay elements are present in Dream Land 3, including the ability to suck up enemies and copy their abilities. Abilities grant Kirby unique powers such as turning into a fireball, throwing blades, and becoming electrified. These powers can be used to both defeat enemies and access hidden areas. Each stage contains a hidden Heart Star that can be unlocked by completing various objectives, so uncovering every secret is vital if you want to collect all of them!

The biggest difference between Dream Land 3 and other Super Nintendo Kirby games is certainly the visual style. This game foregoes the usual pixel art of the franchise for a painting-like visual style. While the art style initially feels underwhelming, it eventually gives Dream Land 3 a unique and memorable quality. The signature colorful characters and positive vibe persists despite the art change, resulting in an aesthetic that feels both familiar and new.

Conclusion

While it's not the best Kirby game, Kirby's Dream Land 3 is still an enjoyable romp with fun secrets to find. The ability to play through the game with a second player makes it an ideal choice for cooperative gaming sessions and the easy difficulty encourages new players to join the fun. If you're looking for a colorful platformer with memorable gameplay mechanics and an undeniably adorable protagonist, Kirby's Dream Land 3 is an excellent choice.

Pros:

  • Fun boss battles
  • Unique visual style
  • Replayable levels with hidden secrets

Cons:

  • Gameplay can get repetitive
  • Contains less content than previous Kirby games
