You get to make your own boxer from scratch and train and build him up to turn him into a heavyweight contender. There are 28 opponents you will face during the course of the game, only by beating them all will you be victorious. There are also exhibition modes where you can play against the computer or a friend.

Evander Holyfield's “Real Deal” Boxing is a game of quick jabs, uppercuts, and dancing out of the way of your opponents punches. Go twelve rounds, knock your opponent out, and make it to the “Real Deal” himself, Evander Holyfield. Along the way, increase your strength, stamina, speed, and defense through training, all the while earning a larger paycheck with each fight.

Evander Holyfield's Real Deal Boxing is viewed from a side on perspective. Your health is represented in the form of a bar labelled “energy”. When that empties you'll be knocked out. At the top of the screen you're given a plan view of the ring and where the fighters are in relation to it so you can see if you're about to be backed up into the ropes. The time left in the current round and the round number are also displayed at the top of the screen.
