Game Reviews

Bruce Banner, a.k.a. The Incredible Hulk, is one of the most famous superheroes of all time, and he's making an impressive video game debut.

Mean Green Machine

Hulk's archnemesis, the Leader, is using a battalion of diabolical robots and genetically engineered mutants to rapidly overwhelm Earth's defenses. As The Hulk, you must stop this diabolical force.

ProTip: To defeat Rhino at the end of Level 1, stand in the middle of the screen and punch him as he runs at you. While he reels back, jump over him and then turn to face him as he comes from the other direction.

Five large, old-fashioned, platform-style action/adventure levels, each with multiple paths, make for the bulk of Hulk's game play. Your strategy in each level is simple: Fight from one end to the other, subdue the Abomination, and face a final boss, and one of Hulk's nemeses, including Rhino, Absorbing Man, and Tyrannus from Marvel's Hulk comic books.

  • Break all crates, jars, and other objects to look for hidden power-ups.
  • Use your Transformation power-ups to turn back into Bruce and explore otherwise unreachable areas or take special shortcuts.

As the Hulk, you've got one of four energy states to contend with: Super-Hulk, Hulk, Bruce Banner, and Hulk-Out. The more beefed up the Hulk, the deadlier his repertoire of moves. You gauge what state you're in by the energy bar on top of the screen. When your energy drops to 40 percent, you fade from Super-Hulk to Hulk, and so on.

The Hulk takes a pretty brutal beating from the Leader's crew, but there are various power-ups, like energy -- restoring capsules, that help him out. Even on the Easy setting, the game's probably a little too tough for most beginners.

The moves for each of Hulk's incarnations include runs, jumps, punches, grabs, throws, and some special moves for Super Hulk and Hulk-Out. Although the button presses for the moves are straightforward, pulling them off in the heat of combat isn't as precise as it should be.

One of the best parts of this game is how it looks. Good- sized, well-animated, colorful sprites really capture the Hulk and his famous foes. Solid background graphics and some interesting cut scenes round out the game's comic book look.

Jazzy tunes serve as a backdrop for standard sound effects and some nice growls and grunts from the Hulk. A little more variety would've been nice, but they do the trick.

The Hulk of the Matter

The Incredible Hulk's just what it's billed to be-a solid game that's gonna please fans of the big guy as well as gamers just looking for a good time.

  • If you stand on top of cars or phone booths, you can wait for the enemies to leap at you and easily punch them.
  • There are several hidden Continue coins in the game, including one in Level 2. Carry a rock up to this platform, bash through the blocks, and find the Coin hidden inside.
  • Pick up and move phone booths, rocks, and other objects, and stand on them to reach inaccessible areas.

I know that at first glance The Incredible Hulk game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive might make your roll your eyes. However, this is a damn fine action platformer and one that I would actually go as far as to say is really underrated. The Hulk is quite a hard character to get right, but this game manages it quite well.

Hulk Smashes The Leader

As a platformer action game from 1994, you have probably lowered your expectations for the story of this game. It may surprise you to know that this game is pretty awesome from a story point of view. The Leader is the main villain and he is up to no good and our buddy the Hulk is going to put him in his place.

What is really neat about The Incredible Hulk is that this game has three different endings, four if you count the one where you do not continue the game. You get a different ending for each of the difficulty levels so the game gives you a reason to beat it on them all.

Green With Envy

I feel that The Incredible Hulk is a game that holds up pretty well in the looks department. It looks like the animated show from the 90s along with many comic book influences. The animation is fantastic, especially for The Hulk who jumps and smashes just as you would expect him to. There is a nice variety to the levels and background details are pretty awesome.

The enemy designs can be pretty repetitive, but to be fair show me a platformer or beat-em-up from this period of time that was not! There are many other famous characters in the game such as Abomination and Rhino who you will have to fight in boss battles. The soundtrack fits the game perfectly and fits in great with the action.

Smashing Them In!

The gameplay is far better than many people realize. It is not just a mindless smash everything in sight… ok, so that is part of the game. But the many different levels are all quite large and have a nice variety to their design. Exploration is encouraged and the levels are far more challenging than you would think. The collision detection can occasionally be a tad off, but for the most part, the game is a lot of fun to play.

Puny Banner!

One aspect of The Incredible Hulk game that never gets talked about is the fact you can play as Bruce Banner. This is a weird way is a “power-up” that you can use at certain points in the game. You get the icon and you can turn into Banner. Why the heck would you want to play as Bruce Banner? Well, he can get into areas that the Hulk cannot and he can also use a gun. It is a nice change of pace, but when you take a hit, you turn back into The Hulk. It is a very interesting gameplay

I know that some people feel that licensed games of this era had the tendency to be not very good. Well, The Incredible Hulk is not one of those games, actually this is a really fun game and one of the best superhero games of the 16-bit era. The game looks fantastic, it is a lot of fun to play and it has multiple endings so it has a lot of replay value too!

8.5

Final Score

Pros:

  • The game looks great
  • The animation of The Hulk is really well done
  • Playing as Bruce Banner is more interesting than you would think
  • You have multiple endings to obtain
  • Boss battles against some awesome Marvel villains

Cons:

  • Some might be shocked at how difficult the game is
  • On some occasions, your hits feel like they go through an enemy

We Don't Expect the highest quality from a game labouring under the twin burdens of console port and movie cash-in, but so soon after the porting excellence of Devil May Cry 4, The Incredible Hulk brings everyone crashing back down to Earth. This is an unashamed rip-off, charging full whack for a thinly souped-up PlayStation 2 version of the game, where the higher-resolution mode only leaves the graphics looking more embarrassed and naked. This is an ancient-looking, repetitive and buggy turd.

The story, as with most licensed titles, loosely follows the plot of the film, shoe-horning an extra faction to justify the gamut of repetitive "find this, punch that" scenarios that makes up most of the game. You run around the city of New York, fighting against either the army or The Enclave - a totally generic, group of high-tech terrorists that have popped up in the comics every now and again.

This is an open-world game that might be serviceable if it wasn't so bland, featureless and ugly. You pull off moves with combinations of the middle and right mouse buttons, while also having to move the unwieldy camera. Using the mouse just doesn't feel right, so the Hulk is only really controllable with a 360 pad.

Graphically, it's atrocious. Textures fail to improve at higher resolutions, and the game's engine has a shocking draw-distance - the sudden appearance of trees and buildings is embarrassing. The game's bugs are pretty much the insult to an injury that's the game itself.

Cars explode at the slightest touch, and their AI leads to hilarious situations where they turn around to speed in the other direction on seeing you, only to lightly brush a wall and detonate. Civilians don't seem to notice the Hulk's activities. Enemies get stuck in the side of buildings, and you'll spend the end of some missions jumping about like a blue-arsed fly trying to locate the one remaining Enclave swine.

The Incredible Hulk has no place expecting to be bought and played. And the fact that it's been made under the decades-old 'shit game, doesn't matter' business model doesn't make it even slightly less enraging; in fact, that just makes it 10 times worse.

Hulk smash. Hulk break stuff. That's what the Incredible Hulk does. Marvel's greenest, and possibly meanest, superhero, is perhaps the strongest creature in the galaxy--with the exception of Juggernaut and maybe The Thing. Anyway, he's pretty strong and he likes to "smash" stuff--you get the picture. And now, thanks to the good folks at Eidos, you get to play the game too.

There have been a couple of similar-looking games for the PlayStation before--Hulk looks remarkably like Interplay's Loaded--but so far nobody's done a 3D maze platform game with beat-'em-up elements, so at least it's a first. The version we played had only one level, so it's hard to say how this will look when complete.

The forced 3D perspective works well enough, and the addition of accurate light-sourcing adds a spectacular dimension. Marvel-esque metal guitar follows the action as Hulk leaps, punches and kicks his way around each level. Eidos promises a bunch of boss characters, all favorites from the comic book and plenty of cartoon violence. Mmm. Hulk smash.

Marvel Comics' Incredible Hulk sulks onto the PlayStation with a mediocre effort. The Hulk has been captured by The Pantheon, and he must escape while assembling the missing pieces of a destructive time machine.

In 14 levels of mazes, enemies, and obstacles, Hulk goes green by punching, kicking, and using limited special moves.

All action is presented in a third-person perspective while you clunk through average-looking 3D environments that are hindered by an overuse of shading that hides details. With animation and sound effects that are as ragged as the Hulk's clothes, the whole incredible experience soon becomes repetitive. This one is a rental for diehard Hulk comics' fans only.

ProTips:

  • Cluster enemies together and execute the Floor Smash to take 'em out
  • Don't destroy the crates! Use them to reach high places.

Sometimes all you need to get a job done is to ask politely. Other times you need brute force to get your will across. I he Hulk isn't really good in the conversation area, but he does have the physique to scare the hell out of anyone who stands in his way.

Sometime this fall, gamers will have the chance to play as their favorite green meta-morph in the first video game dventure bearing his name. As the Hulk, your mission is to infiltrate the enemy's lair and deal with the countless robots, laser traps, lava pods and hovering enemies as well as miscellaneous switches and activator buttons that will allow for safe passage through the stage. To deal with these problems, the Hulk is equipped with the ability to punch and kick his way through the obstacles standing in his way. You can use any of his 20 offensive and defensive moves to keep his power bar fully charged and to protect him from attacks. The title features levels that seem to have been plucked right from the classic comic-book pages, which gives it a classic feel to a new style of action incorporated into the title.

Play is based in the third-person side-scrolling manor that allows your character full movement over any area of the level. There are over 14 action-filled levels in the title, which incorporate a multilevel range of platforms and staircases in each for a feeling of vertical exploration unseen in any pervious title on the market.

Wherever your passion lies, Incredible Hulk has what you want in an action game. No matter if you are looking for an in-depth title to challenge you to the end or just a few levels of action, you can't go wrong with the Hulk.

When the Hulk gets angry, he smashes. This game offers every Hulk fan the chance to slip into the torn pants of the mean, green smashing machine. The Hulk battles through 14 levels of action in this 3-D adventure game. He has complete freedom of movement in the game; in all directions. The game's levels.are from classic Hulk comic books. Hulk has all the muscle he needs to deal with them; he has 20 offensive and defensive moves. Besides bad guys, the Hulk also has to contend with evil robots, laser cannons, lava pools and other hazards.

If I had a nickel for every crappy licensed game that squirmed its way onto store shelves, I sure as hell wouldn't be stuck reviewing 'em for a living. The Incredible Hulk falls squarely into this category, thanks to its mindless, repetitive gameplay and uninspired level designs. Technically speaking, Hulk isn't so offensive; respectable character animation mixes with a neat angled perspective to offer a decent visual package. In fact, seeing the game in motion made me wonder why EA hasn't attempted a handheld version of Diablo (PS1). Hulk's problem lies in its gameplay: It's just plain boring. Walking around massive, confusing levels and punching out enemies over and over (and over and over) with the same three or four moves is not fun--it's tedious. The awkward controls don't help matters; lining yourself up with objects you want to destroy is often unnecessarily difficult. That said, the option to pick up or destroy pretty much anything in your path is pretty cool, but it's not enough to save this otherwise unincredible game.

4

Want to know what's really annoying about Hulk? Each time you turn it on, you're forced to wade through a half dozen licensing screens...which isn't bad in fun games, but here, it seems like a torture-chamber waiting room. The moronic A.I. and repetitive missions will bore you, and the irritatingly humongous levels just prolong the torture. And how come you have to relearn your special Rage moves in every level? I doubt that the Hulk so frequently forgets his natural inclination to smash. Just another unimpressive movie cash-in. Hulk bad.

6

This portable Hulk does a pretty incredible job of smashing all manner of junk, but his methods leave something to be desired. Punch, punch, jump over obstacle, punch, Super Smash, punch--I agree with John and G. Ford, it gets a bit old. I did, however, enjoy the three-quarters perspective, which imparts a bit of Diablo-style strategy and makes The Incredible Hulk feel like not-just-another side-scrolling licensed Game Boy quickie.

This game looks really intense from what I saw. Unfortunately it isn't completed, but I think it's a great game in the works. The control performs superbly and the graphics run very smoothly. In this game battle villains like The Leader. Rhino and Tyranus with the famous Hulk punches, headbutts and stomping attacks. The game promises long-term challenge and enjoyment as it will take hours to master all the moves and difficult levels. I don't like the average punch-and-move punch-and-move game, but this one looks like it will be a lot more than just that. The idea that you have over 15 moves to do makes the game all the more interesting. Definitely look for this game when it does appear.

THE GOOD

Great graphics and superb game play make this quite an interesting gaming experience.

THE BAD

This game really wasn't finished enough for me to form a bad' about it. Watch out next time!

THE UGLY

Just wondering how smelly that Hulk guy must be after a long hard day of fighting. Phew!

Overview

From the pages of Marvel comics comes The Incredible Hulk. The mean green fighting machine is staring in his own adventure and he is mad as ever. For all of The Hulk fans out there, a solid title staring Mr. Green has been a long time coming. Unfortunately, after playing Eidos' version of The Incredible Hulk, you may still be looking for something solid.

For the younger generation not familiar with who the Hulk is and how he became the Hulk, let me fill you in. Dr. Robert Bruce Banner was a normal guy who happened to be a nuclear physicist. One day, an exploding Gamma bomb exposed him to a massive dose of Gamma radiation, thus altering his genetic structure. Now, whenever he gets angry or excited, Dr. Banner turns into a huge green monster with superhuman strength. The monster is known as Incredible Hulk.

In his latest adventure, the Hulk has been taken prisoner by members of a team of Super Heroes sent on tactical missions. The Super Heroes goal is to try and convince the Hulk that his powers can be used for good and benefit mankind. Your job is to battle the Hulk out of captivity to confront the leader. All of this to prove that he can be turned to good.

Gameplay

The Incredible Hulk is best described as a side-scrolling adventure game. The object is to battle your way through 14 levels of enemies and puzzles to face the leader of the Pantheons. If he can make it, he will be convinced his powers can be used for good. Unfortunately, a load of Super Villains are out to get in his way and keep him from ever reaching his goal. It is up to you to defeat these enemies and make it through alive.

The Incredible Hulk is armed only with his super strength to battle the enemies. Hulk has learned a number of attacks which even include some special attack he can pull off when he has collected enough extra power. The Hulk can walk, run, jump, punch kick, duck, block, uppercut, grab an throw objects and do a shoulder charge. When he has the power to perform the special moves, he can pull off a sonic clap, floor smash, vortex spin and even call on an emergency team that is out to protect him. All of these moves are nice but fairly unexciting.

You will basically be battling your way through 3D levels that are dark and bland. The object of each level is different but the common goal is making it to the next level. I really just could not get into this game. It lacked original gameplay and was very average. I could not for the life of me figure out why hitting the walls replenished your life meter. The levels have various power-ups scattered throughout that will also replenish power but if you are running low, just start bashing the hell out of the wall. Huh?

One inventive thing about the game is the ability to call on the emergency guardians during fights. These guardians are the Super Heroes that have kidnapped you and are trying to help you. If things start to get hairy, just call upon your available guardian to come down and perform their special power. This was definitely the most inventive aspect of the game.

I will say The Incredible Hulk is very challenging. There are a number of puzzles that must be solved to reach the next level. The puzzles come in the form of switches, finding hostages, located devastating secret weapons and others. This has all of the makings of a cool game but it just does not play up to the potential. We all know a great story only goes so far and it is the gameplay that counts.

I have one last question. The idea behind The Incredible Hulk is that Dr. Banner is a normal guy and the Hulk only comes out when he gets mad. Why is there never any mention of his normal human self in the game? I think it would have been better if during the normal exploration parts of the game, you play as a normal person and when you are confronted with obstacles or enemies, you have to change to the hulk. This would have added a whole new element to the game and, quite frankly, would have followed the story of the Hulk better. Basically what you have here is a game loosely based on The Incredible Hulk hoping to draw in comic book fans.

Graphics

The Graphics in The Incredible Hulk are average at most times. The darkness that is present through the game gets a bit old. This could easily have been a 16-bit title wrapped in a 32-bit case. I found a lot of the items blending into the background and difficult to locate. The Hulk himself looks pretty cool but there is nothing spectacular here.

Bottom Line

The Incredible Hulk is a fairly ho-hum game that could have been better. I really wish they would have incorporated human to Hulk morphing because this is really what the Hulk is based on. I think what you will find is this game wears thin fairly quick and unless you are a huge fan of the Hulk, I suggest renting it first to see if this green machine is for you. For the rest of the world that has no interest in comics but just want a good game, this will probably be a disappointment.

Fans of the Marvel Comics superheroes can rejoice - Hulkmania is here! The rock-solid Genesis game has been translated into one of the best-looking Game Gear games of the summer.

A Banner Game

Marvel's heroes don't always fully succeed as hand-held games (just ask Spidey), but The Hulk rocks. When the Leader constructs a huge fortress, the mean green Hulkin' machine plows into five increasingly tough levels of side-view robot-stomping action. Ahead are confrontations with such Marvel-ous bosses as Rhino and Abomination.

Sound challenging? It is, but the Hulkster is well armed. His arsenal includes three punches, a head butt, a wall-breaking thump, and the ability to throw enemies and objects. Most of these attacks can be launched quickly and easily. The only control problem involves Hulk's jump, which is sometimes inaccurate.

Game Gear graphics don't get much better than this. The sprites are big, the colors are bright, the transformation from Dr. Banner to Mr. Hulk is well executed, and the Hulk moves with a savage grace. His motions as he climbs up and down ladders are particularly impressive. You'll be glad the graphics are strong, because the sounds are weak. Hulk's hits land with little sonic force.

Marvel-ous Mayhem

It's a heckuva Hulkuva game. Only the repetitive waves of robots diminish its game play. The imaginative bosses offer good variety, however, and the Hulk's own unique skills should keep you going. Just remember: He's more than just a pretty face.

ProTips:

  • Position yourself so you fight one enemy at a time.
  • Don't rush blindly Into tunnels or onto platforms. Expect an immediate fight whenever you venture into a new area.

There's something mighty appealing about a mindless brute who's simply "the strongest there is". Sadly though, this game doesn't have much to do with its Marvel Comics incarnation.

Stop me if you've heard this before: He walks from left to right, jumps on platforms, and hits enemies. He picks up gamma capsules to increase power and gain special moves. And he fights one of the Hulk's main villains - the Rhino, Tyrranus, etc. - at the end of stages.

See the problem? You could put any character in here without changing the formula. Sure, it looks OK, but side-scrolling action games have been done to death, and nothing makes this stand out It's got tiny characters, just a handful of combat moves, and not enough variety among enemies. We've seen it all before - show us something new.

Bruce Banner, a famous scientist, has accidentally turned himself into the enormous Incredible Hulk. Whenever he gets angry or is exposed to Gamma rays, he's trans-formed into an unstoppable green behemoth of destruction.

Just like in the comics, the Hulk can pound enemies into the ground. This side-scrolling game has you fighting all the famous super villains, including the Rhino. The Incredible Hulk is an unstoppable force, but will you be able to get through all the levels?

U.S. Gold brings us this cart with all the action from the comics. This game will really turn you green!

Unwittingly turned into the Incredible Hulk, Bruce Banner must face those that want to destroy him. Pulverize anyone who gets into your lumbering way. Use holds and smashes against the armies of cyborgs who wish you dead.

Collect power-ups hidden throughout the many humongous levels, and eventually turn back into your human form. The Incredible Hulk is an action extravaganza. You will face seemingly impossible odds. The graphics are very good for the Game Gear, and make for a good portable game.

If you are a fan of the comics, The Incredible Hulk will be a smash. Literally, It's just like the Genesis version of the game.

The Incredible Hulk is very cool to look at, but the play control needs to be better. You almost get hit by everything the enemies throw at you. Trying to pick up items quickly can get aggravating. The sounds are nice, and the graphics of the Hulk himself look like they're from the comic series. If you are a hard-core gamer, you might like this one but the difficult control will probably give even experienced garners a problem.

5

What we have here is a game with great graphics, animation and sound plagued by difficult control, plus way too many cheap hits. Since the Hulkster has no defensive moves like blocking, you end up inching your way toward enemies just to hit them. All the different attacks Hulk can perform on enemies are great. The problem is that they're so hard to execute, you end up getting frustrated in the long run.

5

If you're expecting a game loaded with decent graphics, good sound effects, and some very cool moves from the Hulk, you've come to the right place. But if you are looking for a game with good game play, you might as well move on because this title is definitely lacking in this department. You get hit so easily during each stage. The enemies shoot almost a steady stream of bullets that you can't avoid. Unfair.

5

I'm surprised they didn't do more with the Hulk. There seemed to be a lot of moves on later levels, but at first, the game is frustrating and only has a simple punch and throw. The game could use a few more type of enemies and more types of power-ups to interact with. The Incredible Hulk has a lot of possibilities, but they weren't fully exploited. The graphics were decent but it needs more game play to help out.

The Hulk smashes through this side- scroller with more anger than a Republican convention in Berkeley. Does the Hulk measure up to other super side- scrollers? Almost.

ProTips:

  • Watch out for this obvious game bug! Don't enter this crevice unless you have at least two Transformation capsules. If you get hit and transform back to the Hulk, you can't get out!
  • The easiest way to progress is to throw your enemies behind you and walk for. They won't charge you from behind.

Follow the Leader

It seems the Hulkster has rubbed Leader the wrong way. The butt-headed Leader has built a Fortress deep within the Earth and hopes to rule the world. Like most fanatics, Leader's all brains and no brawn. So the Hulk steps in with his brute strength and singular purpose: Stop Leader. Leader responds by sending in a lot of Hulk's rivals, including Rhino, Absorbing Man, Tyrannus, and Abomination, who show up as bosses.

The Hulk morphs into several variations. At full power he's Hulk-Out, a mighty and destructive force that move's 1 faster, jumps higher, and punches harder than a cruise missile. If his Gamma level dips, you become a slightly weaker Super Hulk. Dip lower, and you're an average, everyday Hulk. If your Gamma reaches below five percent, you're nebbishy Bruce Banner, as powerful as a sick puppy.

Your only weapon is your strength, and with it you can blast through walls, knock out enemies, and trigger switches. As Banner you're armed with a two-shot gun.

All Hulk Breaks Loose

The Hulk is graphically gorgeoUS. The sprites are big but riot screen-blasting, and the backgrounds look great. Some levels are repetitive, but what's there is good.

The sounds are hip hop, Hulk style. The beat is infectious but not overwhelming, and standard sound effects pepper the game.

The controls are simple: punch and uppercut. Although there are other moves, these two are all you need. Despite some tricky jumping and landing sequences, you can play this game without the manual.

The Hulk Sulks

For such a heavy-hitting hero the Hulk is surprisingly tame. Most gamers could play through in one evening, probably between dinner and dessert. The Hulk hits but never hurts the thumbs. He probably won't leave other side- scrolling heroes (like Super-man and Maximum Carnage) green with envy.

  • The Brain has a weak spot. Try uppercuttlng it from behind, but be careful not to get trapped when it descends.
  • Take out ceiling laser guns by standing under them, jumping up, then punching them.

What's big, green, bulky, and mean? Yeah, yesterday's lunch, but what else? That's right, The Incredible Hulk is back, and this time the Sega Genesis, the Super NES, and the Game Gear are his stomping grounds.

Green Is Beautiful

The Incredible Hulk by U.S. Cold adds another Marvel comic personality to the swelling video game superhero roster. Judging by the awesome graphics and gorgeous backgrounds, this game just may be "incredible"!

The Genesis and Super NES versions will be virtually identical, five-level games. The Game Gear version will be a four-meg cart, also with five levels.

Mean but Hot Lean

The Leader, one of the Hulk's fiercest foes, is out to conquer the Earth. You make appearances as both Dr. David Banner and the green meanie, fighting Leader's allies. You'll wrestle with all takers in the streets, the warehouses, organic caverns, and other places where evil hides its gruesome face. Roman centurions, mechanical warbots, and alien slugs are no match for the crushing power of the Hulk, but in this game, Hulk also fights his four most fearsome enemies: the Rhino, Absorbing Man, Abomination, and Tyrannus. Naturally, Banner appears when the Hulk takes too many hits.

Some cool twists rev up Hulk's fighting style of "crush first, ask questions later." In the 16-bit games, the Hulk will be able to pull more than 25 moves. He can Uppercut and Head Butt like a pro. As he grabs plutonium capsules and builds up his power, he'll have more moves. For example, he'll slam his hands together to produce a Sonic Clap shock wave. The Ball Mash will squash robots into a ball and bowl them into a crowd. The Super Stomp will knock down all the enemies -- and shake your screen, too!

David Banner's a weakling, but he won't be a pushover. There are some hidden areas that will be big enough only for Banner to slide into. There he might find a machine gun, power-ups...or maybe nothing at all!

A Fistful of Hollers

The Incredible Hulk is incredibly close at hand! Get ready for Hulkamania!
