Comix Zone

One of the most underrated platform conversions of all time and one of the least known Sega games, Comix Zone is an innovative platform game that turns the typical side-scrolling format into a cool interactive comic book, where each scene is a panel. In contrast to mundane hero-saves-the-world plot of countless other platform games, the story in Comix Zone is unique, and fits in perfectly with the game's presentation. You are comic book artist Sketch Turner, who is sucked into his own comic book world and must fight numerous baddies to escape back to the real world.

While Comix Zone is in many ways a typical punch-everyone-in-sight-and-move-to-next-screen platform game, the innovative comic-book style presentation sets it above and beyond other games of this ilk. Word balloons appear when Sketch talks to someone, and once he knocks down an end-level “boss,” he'll leap out of the page and back down into the next panel, or even shortcut to the panels below. This inside / outside dichotomy of a comic book is used to excellent results. For example, Sketch can rip loose chunks of the page itself (i.e. where he is in) to make deadly paper airplanes. He can also punch baddies through the ink boundaries of a panel. These effects greatly enhance the atmosphere, and each new level comes with surprising new effects.

Fans of the Commodore 64 classic Dan Dare (based on the British comic hero) will immediatley recognize Comix Zone as being a true spiritual descendant, and a great one at that. The only downsides I can think of are: a) the game is a tad too short, and b) it lacks any save feature of any kind-- a curious absence inherited from the console version that should have been fixed. Still, Comix Zone is well worth the time for fans of superheroes comics, and platform fans in general. Despite its shorter-than-average length, the game offers multiple paths (via different panels you can go to) so that the replay value is somewhat high. With innovative concepts, smooth controls, and vibrant graphics, Comix Zone is a must-have.

Sketch Turner was a starving comic book artist, living with his pet rat Roadkill… that is until a lightning storm mysteriously brought his cartoon villain, Mortus, to life and imprisoned Sketch within the pages of his own comic book. Now trapped in the world that he himself created, but someone else is now drawing, Sketch must battle through the pages of his own comic book, and past his own creations, to a final battle with Mortus. Perhaps one of his own creations, General Alissa Cyan might be able to help…

Comix Zone is a side-scrolling fighting game with a difference, you're inside of a comic book and you yourself know it. Smash enemies into the sides of frames, rip through the paper to unleash a super move and otherwise wreck havoc throughout the limitations of the graphic novel. Sketch himself can jump, attack and use various items that he finds along the comic book, including his rat friend, Roadkill. Button combinations can be used to unleash powerful techniques.

The graphics, which were drawn by real comic book artists, give you the sense that youre actually playing a comic. As you fight the good fight, youll see Mortus literally draw new enemies to take you down. If you re able to master some fighting moves and collect a few power-ups, you just might find yourself face-to-face with your own worst creation in the most important fight of your life!

Comix Zone is an extremely original and visually impressive game which immerses you in a comic book world. It's probably one of the coolest games I've ever seen on the Genesis. The idea behind it is that the comic's author has magically switched places with the book's villain. Your hero moves from frame to frame and page to page as a large hand draws new villains for you to fight. The remarkable graphics are nearly comic book quality, with bubbles of dialog that appear every so often. Gameplay involves fighting monsters, picking up objects, and opening new areas. The game also features some kick-ass music and multiple pathways. I think this is a highly underrated game.

In Comix Zone you control Sketch through three Episodes, each consisting of two levels. A variety of moves can be used to fight against the thugs that Mortus draws to fight you right before your eyes. These include the serial high tornado kick, the uppercut, the floor sweep, the whirlwind jump kick, and more. You are also able to pick up special items like knives, grenades, bombs, superhero icons, and even your pet sewer rat, Roadkill, who is always willing to help his master.

In Comix Zone, Sketch Turner is just a “starving artist” comic book writer/rock musician trying to get by. Things are going okay for Sketch until the day that his most fiendish villain, the evil Mortus, comes to life. Mortus uses his evil methods to pull Sketch into the comic and switch places with him in the real world. Once in the comic book, Sketch meets the heroine of his comic, Alissa, and his adventure begins.

[review added by nano4335]

The game progresses linear through each page of the comic book, however secret paths and alternate routes through the story can be discovered. At the end of each level, Sketch receives a super hero rating for how well he's progressing.

GREAT GRAPHICS COLORS ETC THE GAME IS ALSO VERY CHALLENGING AS WELL
